Position title: UC Berkeley Postdoctoral Fellow in Buddhist Studies

Salary range: The UC postdoc/academic salary set the minimum pay determined by experience level at appointment (postdoc) and the UC academic salary scales set the minimum pay at appointment (lecturer). Current postdoc salary scale. The current minimum salary range for this position is $69,073 - $77,030. Lecturer salary scale. A reasonable estimate for Lecturer positions is $70,977 - $73,107.

Position description

The Numata Center for Buddhist Studies oversees a variety of research programs, postdoctoral fellowships, scholarly events, and outreach activities at the University of California at Berkeley. With the generous support of the Shengyen Foundation, it is pleased to announce a two-year full-time postdoctoral research-teaching fellowship in Chinese Buddhism.

The Fellowship is intended to foster the academic careers of recent Ph.D.'s whose area of research is Buddhist Studies; the Fellowship will provide them with time and funding to pursue their research along with the opportunity to gain teaching experience. Fellows will give a public lecture on their research as part of the Numata Center for Buddhist Studies' Colloquium Series; they are also expected to participate in regular Numata Center programmatic activities.

Should you teach, you will be appointed to a lecturer position. Lecturer positions may range up to 33% time. General Duties as a lecturer in addition to teaching responsibilities include:

  • Holding office hours
  • Assigning grades
  • Advising students
  • Preparing course materials.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application): PhD (or equivalent international degree) or enrolled in a PhD (or equivalent international degree) program

Additional qualifications (required at time of start):

  • PhD or equivalent international degree
  • Candidates may have no more than 3 years of post-PhD research experience prior to the appointment start date.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Ph.D. or equivalent international degree in Buddhist Studies or related field.
  • University-level teaching experience in closely related field.
