Join the University of Adelaide’s Faculty of Sciences, Engineering, and Technology as an IT Support Officer and become a vital part of our innovative team at The Plant Accelerator node of the Australian Plant Phenomics Network.
The IT Support Officer will work closely with plant scientists, data analysts, engineers, and administrative and building maintenance staff to ensure the high quality and reliability of phenotyping and bioinformatics services at the facility. This collaborative environment requires excellent technical skills and a proactive approach to maintaining and enhancing IT infrastructure.
Under general direction and with support from the University's Information Technology and Digital Services team, the IT Support Officer will maintain The Plant Accelerator’s specialised IT and research infrastructure, including rack-mounted servers, non-standard desktops and laptops, and custom research equipment.
Key responsibilities include performing preventative maintenance tasks such as patching and updating operating systems, software, and firmware. The role also involves providing operational and ad-hoc support to Plant Accelerator staff and researchers, troubleshooting IT systems, and maintaining research infrastructure across the entire technology stack. This includes delivering tier 1 and 2 support for various systems.
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintain local IT infrastructure, ensuring the high-quality operation of research infrastructure.
- Enhance monitoring tools and troubleshoot IT infrastructure problems.
- Proactively identify and implement improvements in IT systems.
- Collaborate with a diverse team to support world-class research.
- Provide technical support and maintain high-quality internal documentation.
Selection Criteria:
- Experience maintaining IT infrastructure for a small to medium business or organisation.
- Strong technical troubleshooting skills including working knowledge of networks, firewalls, and physical IT infrastructure.
- High level of organisation and eagerness to identify and implement process improvements.
- Excellent communication skills and experience working within and outside of an IT team, especially in a research and/or higher education environment.
- Demonstrated experience in administering and maintaining both Windows and Linux operating systems, and familiarity with system management, including configuring, updating, and troubleshooting within both environments.
- Demonstrated ability to promote the organisational values of integrity, respect, collegiality, excellence and discovery, and a commitment to positively comply with the associated behaviour expectations
Desirable:
- Experience with monitoring dashboards and/or command centres (e.g., InfluxDB, Telegraf, Grafana).
- Basic understanding of electronics and IT hardware diagnostics and repair.
- Willingness to participate in the on-call/standby roster for out-of-hours facility maintenance.

Qualifications:
- A degree in information technology or computer science with subsequent relevant experience; or
- Extensive experience and specialist expertise or broad knowledge in a technical field relating to IT infrastructure
