Research Associate (Level ARAS)
- Based in UniSA STEM at the Mawson Lakes campus
- Part-time (0.6FTE), fixed term contract until 31 December 2026
- Commencement Salary: $96,929 per annum pro rata (plus 17% superannuation)
About the Role
Reporting to the Professorial Lead, the Research Associate will contribute to the research efforts of multiple projects with UniSA STEM, particularly those titled ‘Hydrogen carbon waste into concrete: AI assisted nanoscience approach’; ‘Using drinking water treatment alum sludge to make greener and durable concrete’; and ‘Creating pH-sensitive self-healing concrete using sludge waste for sewers’.
These projects are respectively funded via a Multi-Institutional Agreement (MIA) – Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Project Grant (DP) between the University of South Australia (UniSA), Swinburne University of Technology, and Curtin University; a SmartCrete CRC Project Agreement between the University of South Australia (UniSA), Adelaide Brighton Cement Limited, and South Australian Water Corporation (SA Water); and a a Multi-Institutional Agreement (MIA) – Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Project Grant (DP) between the University of South Australia (UniSA) and the University of Queensland (UQ).

Core Responsibilities
- Undertake research under limited supervision to achieve project grant outcomes; i.e. Developing low carbon cementitious materials for possible commercialisation
- Design and perform a range of experiments including appropriate controls to achieve planned research outcomes
- Prepare or contribute to the preparation of refereed journal publications, conference and seminar papers arising from the research
- Provide advice to post graduate students in the appointee’s area of expertise
- Undertake administrative duties associated with relevant research projects, as required from time to time
Essential Skills and Experience
- A postgraduate qualification in an appropriate Science or Engineering area relevant to the research area
- Evidence of high quality research output commensurate with the length of research career, which is published and presented in appropriate forums
- Excellent written and oral communication skills demonstrated through written work such as research reports, research publications and educational materials, and through effective liaison with external partners, colleagues and students
- Ability to plan and execute testing and research with stakeholders
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a research team
