SALARY: $102,727 to $130,000 per year. The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to skill, knowledge, experience, education, and credentials.

Primary Purpose

The Principal Faculty Member and Basic Science Course Director in the Physician Assistant (PA) program is responsible for the design, implementation, and oversight of the basic science curriculum, ensuring its alignment with the program's educational objectives, accreditation standards, and clinical relevance. This position plays a pivotal role in delivering high-quality education in foundational scientific concepts, engaging in scholarly activities, and contributing to the program's administration and service. The ideal candidate will possess expertise in basic sciences, strong teaching experience, and commitment to advancing the educational mission of the program and institution.

Essential Job Functions

Teaching & Basic Science Curriculum Oversight: (Minimum 50% of FTE):

  • Lead the design, organization, and continuous enhancement of the basic science curriculum to align with the PA Program's educational objectives and relevance to clinical practice.
  • Collaborate with didactic and clinical faculty to integrate basic science knowledge throughout the curriculum effectively.
  • Develop, deliver, and update lectures, interactive learning sessions (including small group facilitation and simulation), and course materials on various basic science topics (e.g., physiology, pathology, pharmacology) to PA students at a master's level. Additionally, contribute to other PA program courses through small group facilitation, and/or, if clinically qualified, through lecturing or facilitating in courses where able.
  • Develop, implement, and analyze assessment methods to evaluate student learning and performance in basic science courses, providing timely feedback.
  • Coordinate with institutional and adjunct faculty involved in basic science content delivery, ensuring consistency and adherence to program requirements. Provide mentorship and academic advising to PA students, fostering their engagement and addressing concerns related to course content and learning experiences; directing students to additional resources as appropriate.

Program and Institutional Service: (20% of FTE):

  • Participate in faculty meetings, committees, and other program-related activities.
  • Actively contribute to applicant evaluation and program admissions processes as a faculty member.
  • Participate in program-level assessment activities and contribute to ongoing program evaluation and accreditation processes.
  • Serve on institutional-level committees according to professional interests and assigned duties.
  • Participate in activities of state, regional, and national organizations to promote a positive image of the PA concept within academic, lay, and professional communities.

Administration (Program Support): (10% of FTE):

  • Assist with program accreditation documentation and processes.
  • Support the development and implementation of strategic program initiatives.
  • Analyze course evaluations and assessment data to identify areas for curriculum and teaching methodology improvement, in collaboration with relevant program leaders.
  • Implement enhancements to the basic science curriculum based on evaluation results and advancements in science education.

Scholarship & Professional Development: (10% of FTE):

  • Engage in ongoing professional development related to teaching methodologies and advancements in basic science education.
  • Participate in workshops, conferences, and scholarly activities to stay current in the field and contribute to the academic community.
  • Engage in scholarship and faculty development, including original research, publications, and presentations.

Clinical Practice (Optional): (Up to 10% of FTE):

  • Engagement in clinical practice (up to 10% of FTE, approximately one-half day per week, if program needs allow and other duties are fulfilled).
  • This allocation would adjust the percentages of other categories accordingly to maintain a 100% FTE.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Expertise in one or more areas of basic science, ideally with a strong focus on physiology, pathology, pharmacology, or similar fields relevant to medical education.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences, particularly health professions students.
  • Strong background in medical terminology and the clinical relevance of basic sciences.
  • Experience in designing, implementing, and assessing educational programs and curricula.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students in a dynamic educational environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to change and function effectively with limited supervision.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (e.g. Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and academic systems (e.g., learning management systems such as Canvas, BlackBoard).
  • Commitment to inclusive excellence in education.
  • Ability to assess student learning, provide constructive feedback, and facilitate active learning environments.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for effective student mentorship, collaboration with faculty, and engagement with diverse populations.
  • Understanding of PA program accreditation standards (e.g., ARC-PA) as they pertain to faculty responsibilities and curriculum.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Terminal degree (e.g., PhD) in Physiology, Biology, Biochemistry, or a related global basic science area OR a Master's degree from an ARC-PA-accredited Physician Assistant program.
  • Prior teaching experience in higher education, preferably in medical or health professions education.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in curriculum development and assessment in medical or health professions education.
  • Familiarity with competency-based education and its application in PA programs.
  • Experience with program-level assessment, evaluation, and accreditation processes within higher education.
