Principal Technical Officer (Electronics Engineer)
About This Opportunity
We are seeking a talented Principal Technical Officer (Electronics Engineer) to provide specialist technical expertise to support the pioneering neuroscience research undertaken at the Queensland Brain Institute. Working within a collaborative, inquisitive and highly skilled technical team, you will design, develop and manufacture specialised electronic equipment that enables researchers to push the boundaries of brain science. This role plays a critical part in translating ambitious research ideas into practical, reliable and safe technical solutions within a world-class research environment.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Designing, developing and manufacturing specialised electronic equipment, PCBs, prototypes and research-focused engineering systems.
- Collaborating closely with researchers and research support staff to deliver end-to-end “design and build” solutions that meet complex experimental needs.
- Conducting advanced simulations, feasibility studies, cost calculations,
- Fault finding and repair services for laboratory equipment.
- Maintaining a safe, compliant and high-functioning electronic workshop, including oversight of tools, equipment, risk assessments and safe operating procedures.
About You
You will bring a strong technical foundation, a creative problem-solving mindset and a genuine commitment to enabling impactful research. You will demonstrate:
- Completion of a postgraduate qualification in electronics or a related field, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and training.
- Demonstrated expertise in PCB manufacture, electronic components, hand soldering and surface mount soldering.
- Advanced knowledge in the design and manufacture of electronic equipment, including firmware development for embedded processors.
- Ability to manage, mentor and develop technical staff within a research or laboratory environment.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to produce clear technical documentation and collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
- A high level of organisation, attention to detail and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
