James Cook University (JCU) seeks an outstanding senior academic to provide leadership in the role of Dean, Research. The Dean Research is a member of the executive of the University’s Research Division, which enables research excellence, integrity, impact and performance of the University’s academic staff and Higher Degree by Research students.
The Dean Research provides high quality advice to the Deputy Vice Chancellor Research on matters of strategic and operational significance in relation to research, particularly research partnerships and infrastructure. They provide broad leadership to the Research Division and work collaboratively to support the research performance of the Colleges and Research Institutes of the University.
Working across the University and with external stakeholders, the Dean Research supports the University’s research performance, translation and impact by initiating and strengthening research partner engagement with industry, government, and other external organisations.
The Dean Research will also oversee JCU’s unique and diverse research infrastructure, including strategic oversight of field stations, central research facilities, research data management, and high-performance computing capabilities. The Dean will grow and sustain a strong research and service delivery culture, whilst ensuring effective and efficient leadership, governance, management and operation of research infrastructure units to achieve sustainable and high-quality enabling services and functions.
With a high-quality academic track record and scholarly reputation, the ideal candidate will be a collegiate leader with outstanding communication and influencing skills, able to foster relationships with diverse stakeholder groups, including with government, the research sector and the community.
The Dean will have an entrepreneurial mindset and the ability to establish and maintain effective, collaborative, and productive partnerships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders, including government, industry and university partners to create opportunity will be key to success. The Dean will have experience in leadership of research infrastructure, as well as being experienced in developing and implementing relevant research policies, procedures and initiatives that drive research performance across the university.
