Prison Education Graduate Teaching Assistant (Beg Fall 2026)

Job Summary

Key responsibilites for this position include the following:

  • 5% Training (at the beginning of each semester)
  • 70% Mentoring, coaching, one-on-one and small group tutoring, leading study sessions with incarcerated students
  • 25% Assisting instructors by making copies, delivering instructional materials/supplies, and administration

Required Qualifications

To be considered for a graduate assistantship at the University of West Georgia (UWG), students must meet the following criteria:

  • Be fully admitted to a graduate degree program at UWG. Please note: Students admitted provisionally are not eligible for assistantship positions.
  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
  • Be enrolled full-time in a UWG graduate program during the assistantship period.
  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 in all previous and current graduate coursework and remain in good academic standing.
  • Meet eligibility requirements for employment in the United States.
  • In addition, to be considered for the GTAship with Prison Education, students must
  • Have a clean driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Be able to lift/carry and load/unload books and school supplies.

Preferred Qualifications

The preferred candidates will also possess:

  • Strong academic writing skills,
  • Be self-directed,
  • Work well with a team and independently,
  • Take instructions/feedback,
  • Have excellent time management skills.

Proposed Salary

  • A monthly stipend of $1000.00 per month
  • A tuition waiver, reducing your graduate tuition to $25 per semester plus mandatory fees as long as you are employed in your assistantship.

  • The position regularly requires lifting/carrying and loading/unloading of books and supplies.
  • Graduate students from all disciplines are encouraged to apply.
  • System-impacted graduate students, who are not currently under supervision, are especially encouraged to apply.
