Professor - Climate Science and AI
The School of the Environment and the Department of Physics in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in the area of Climate Science and AI. This will be a joint appointment between the School of the Environment (51%) and the Department of Physics (49%) at the rank of Professor, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2026.
We seek candidates conducting research on climate data science that draws together observations, models, and machine learning. Candidates must have a background in modeling the physics of biosphere-atmosphere interactions and must have proven leadership experience in cutting edge research integrating machine learning and climate simulation models to improve future climate change projections.
Candidates must have earned a PhD degree in Environmental Engineering or a related area, and a clearly demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. Candidates must have a proven track record in obtaining research funding in the range of tens of millions of dollars, experience serving as director of a multi-institutional, trans-disciplinary research centre, and must have received multiple awards from leading international professional geoscientific societies (e.g. American Geophysical Union (AGU), European Geoscientific Union (EGU), American Meteorological Society (AMS), etc.). Candidates must have also taught courses on applied mathematics, hydrology and machine learning for environmental science and engineering. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and enhance our existing strengths at the School of the Environment and the Department of Physics. Candidates will have an established international reputation and will be expected to sustain and lead innovative and independent research, and to maintain an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program.
Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence which can be demonstrated by a record of sustained high-impact contributions and publications in top-ranked and field relevant journals, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, and other noteworthy activities that contribute to the visibility and prominence of the discipline, as well as strong endorsements from referees.
Evidence of excellence in teaching will be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, and the teaching dossier, including a teaching statement, sample course materials, and teaching evaluations or other evidence of superior performance in teaching-related activities submitted as part of the application, as well as strong letters of reference.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
The School of the Environment is an interdisciplinary hub within the Faculty of Arts & Science, running undergraduate and graduate programs in environment and sustainability. The School recently launched a new undergraduate certificate in sustainability, open to students in any program in Arts and Science, and partners with Trinity College’s Lawson Centre for Sustainability to create new experiential learning opportunities around the sustainable campus. Through this position, the School is partnering with the vibrant research taking place within the Department of Physics, in particular, its research group in Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Physics, which has collaborative connections to work in environmental science, Arctic science, engineering, and solar-system and exo-solar planetary atmospheres across the three campuses of the University. Our research setting is further enriched by the existence of the University‐wide Centre for Global Change Science. Computational facilities include SciNet, which is a member of the Digital Research Alliance of Canada and is the most powerful university‐based facility in Canada. The appointment will be held at the University of Toronto campus in downtown Toronto (St. George campus).
