Professor in Neurosciences

Université de Montréal’s Faculty of Medicine is one of the world’s leading French-language medical faculties. In both teaching and research, its mission is to actively contribute to the advancement of knowledge and mastery of skills needed to improve healthcare.

The Department of Neurosciences brings together the expertise of multiple teams engaged in cutting-edge research, quality teaching and the promotion of innovation in a multidisciplinary context. Home to a critical mass of experts in both basic and clinical neurosciences, the Department offers a diverse range of education and research programs.

The department’s professors also work in off-campus research centers, primarily at the Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM) and the CHU Sainte-Justine University Hospital Center.

Day-to-day responsibilities

Through your undergraduate and graduate-level teaching, and your research activities, you will contribute to the faculty’s pursuit of excellence. Furthermore, you will promote your discipline and actively participate in the daily activities of a renowned institution. As such, you will:

  • Actively teach at all university levels within the Department of Neurosciences, as well as in other programs in the Faculty;
  • Supervise students at the undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels, as well as postdoctoral fellows, contributing to their academic and scientific training;
  • Develop an innovative and interdisciplinary research program;
  • Develop innovative research platforms in neuroscience, leveraging state-of-the-art infrastructure to understand the neurobiological basis of behavior, including sensorimotor integration, motor control, learning, memory, or neuron–glia interactions;
  • Combine optogenetic tools to target specific cell types, large-scale cellular imaging, and multi-electrode recordings in behaving animals;
  • Promote the development and implementation of new techniques and technologies in neuroscience, such as viral or genetic targeting of different cell types, and apply these approaches in various animal models through collaborations;
  • Encourage collaboration among neuroscientists, engineers interested in developing new biomedical technologies (working at the Courtois Institute of Biomedical Innovation — CI2B, TransMedTech, and Polytechnique), as well as the strong community of data scientists and AI experts (IVADO and Mila);
  • Use advanced analytical methods, for example those based on machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI), to analyze large datasets;
  • Assume a leadership role within the scientific community, both nationally and internationally;
  • Contribute to the smooth functioning of the Department of Neurosciences, by participating in various committees and working groups, thereby strengthening institutional life;
  • Help promote the field, through conferences, scientific publications, and the organization of large-scale scientific events.

Qualifications

  • Hold a doctoral degree (PhD) or equivalent qualification;
  • Have established expertise in cellular, molecular, and synaptic neuroscience;
  • Have a strong research record, illustrating the candidate's ability to publish influential work in top-tier cellular, molecular, and synaptic neuroscience fields;
  • Hold a salaried fellowship or be eligible to apply for the Researcher-Fellowship program from the Quebec Health Research Fund;
  • Demonstrate strong skills in delivering high-quality university-level teaching and student supervision;
  • Demonstrate potential to develop internal and international collaborations;
  • Have adequate proficiency of the French language or be committed to learning it once hired, through the Université de Montréal’s French language support program, in accordance with the Université de Montréal language policy.
