Cerda Chair in Law, Science and Innovation – Faculty Director, Center for Law, Science and Innovation

The Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University invites applications for a tenured faculty position to assume the Cerda Chair in Law, Science and Innovation and serve as the Faculty Director of the Center for Law, Science and Innovation (LSI). Tenured appointment is contingent upon the successful outcome of ASU's expedited tenure review process.

We seek a distinguished lateral scholar with a national or international reputation for impactful work at the intersection of law, science, and technology. The successful candidate will join the ASU Law faculty in Fall 2026 as a Full Professor, allowing for a year of close collaboration and transition with our longstanding LSI Faculty Director, Professor Gary Marchant, before formally assuming both the Cerda Chair and Faculty Director roles in Fall 2027.

The Center for Law, Science and Innovation is the nation’s oldest and largest academic center focused on the legal and policy challenges arising from scientific and technological innovation. For more than 40 years, LSI has been a national leader in research, teaching, and policy development in areas such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, health law, neuroscience, privacy, and sustainability. With a deep and interdisciplinary faculty cohort, a strong record of grants and partnerships, and decades of leadership under Professor Marchant, LSI is a signature center at ASU Law and a cornerstone of the university’s global reputation for innovation.

ASU Law is one of the nation’s top public law schools, committed to academic excellence, inclusivity, and public engagement. The Center for Law, Science and Innovation is central to that mission, and this position offers a rare opportunity to guide its next chapter.

Essential Functions:

  • Deliver instruction in law school courses, especially required first-year and upper-level classes.
  • Participate in committee work and contribute to the college/university community.
  • Participate in professional activities, including presentations, publications, and broader involvement in the legal academic community.
  • Be a nationally recognized scholar in law and science, technology, or innovation;
  • Have the vision and stature to lead a major interdisciplinary research center;
  • Begin a tenured faculty appointment in Fall 2026 and assume the Cerda Chair and LSI Faculty Directorship in Fall 2027;
  • Help shape the future of law and science at a law school known for innovation, access, and impact.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law school, or its equivalent, in an area related to law school curriculum
  • A record of successful law school teaching in courses broadly defined under the umbrella of law, science, and innovation
  • A history of distinguished scholarly achievement commensurate with experience

Desired Qualifications:

  • Administrative experience and desire to lead and grow a multi-disciplinary research center.
  • Clear potential and commitment to producing meaningful, published scholarship in legal fields.
  • Willingness to serve the law school and university community through committees and projects.
  • Active involvement in professional associations, conferences, or related activities.

Application Instructions

To apply, applicants must submit 1) a letter of interest 2) a current C.V. 3) at least three references. The deadline is November 9, 2025. Applications will continue to be accepted on a rolling basis for a reserve pool.
