Job Description Summary
Auburn University Department of Music invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure track Professor of Practice position in its Commercial Music Program. We seek an accomplished music industry professional to play a central role in a dynamic program that supports the Department of Music and enriches the study of music business and professional practice.
The successful candidate will teach Music Business courses, coordinate the Music Business Minor and Commercial Music Internship programs, serve as a liaison to industry partners and program supporters, and act as an ambassador and recruiter for the Department.
Responsibilities Include:
- Teaching courses in music business, branding and promotion, record company operations, popular music history and other possible courses as needed by the department. The candidate will also contribute to ongoing curriculum development and should demonstrate a strong understanding of current and emerging trends in the music industry.
- Mentor students in the Commercial Music major, coordinate the Music Business Minor and oversee Commercial Music internships.
- Teach undergraduate courses in music business, branding and promotion, record company operations, professional development, and popular music history
- Contribute to curriculum development and revision, particularly in music business
- Represent the Commercial Music Program and Department of Music as a national and international ambassador and recruiter while maintaining active professional engagement in the music industry
Minimum Qualifications
- Master's degree or a minimum of 10 years of professional experience in the music industry at the time employment begins
- At least 3 years of teaching experience at the collegiate level
- Proven success in music business through active work in artist management, publicity, and consulting with internationally recognized and industry-relevant artists
- Evidence of successful contributions to curriculum development in collegiate-level music industry programs
- Demonstrated expertise and experience with licensing, copyright, and digital distribution platforms, including familiarity with current industry trends
The successful candidate must meet eligibility requirements for work in the United States at the time the appointment is scheduled to begin and continue working legally for the term of employment.
Desired Qualifications
- Extensive experience in media production (television, film, digital) and/or journalism
- Demonstrated leadership in orchestrating and executing national and international marketing and public relations campaigns for artists, including managing tour support, album releases, and related, high-profile events
- Professional affiliations with major artists, record labels, publishers, production companies, broadcasters, composers, producers, and studio engineers
- Demonstrated expertise in crisis PR management, adeptly managing high-profile artist-related incidents to ensure effective communication and safeguard brand reputation
- Academic experience in music business education, including mentoring students, advising student organizations, and facilitating successful, music industry internship placements
