Center on Civil Justice at NYU Law School

There is a well-documented civil justice crisis in the United States. Americans experience more than 120 million unresolved civil legal problems each year, often with devastating consequences. The Center on Civil Justice (CCJ) engages in civil justice problem-solving with the goal of building a justice system that meets the needs of everyday people—whether in federal court through reforms to mass litigation and litigation finance, or by reimagining state civil court systems to ensure people have access to legal advocates who can address their problems early and equitably. Supported by a distinguished group of litigators and civil practice experts, CCJ collaborates with jurists, academics, members of the plaintiff and defense bars, legal services organizations, and court users to promote research and policy solutions that advance meaningful access to state and federal justice systems. CCJ’s Director, Janet Sabel, former CEO of The Legal Aid Society in New York City, is also a Co-Chair of the New York State Permanent Commission on Access to Justice.
