Program Coordinator for Peer Mentoring

Position Summary/Description:

The Program Coordinator for Peer Mentoring, working collaboratively with the Associate Dean of the Center for Student Success, is responsible for developing, implementing, and assessing peer mentoring programs targeting students in their first year at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The aim of the Peer Mentoring effort is to achieve the following: community building; providing awareness of and exposure to campus resources; bridging the gaps between home and the college experience; creating an environment where students feel supported; fostering holistic student development. The Program Coordinator facilitates programming to support the first-year experience and provides opportunities for enrichment and engagement to support the professional development of volunteer peer mentors. This is a 12-month, full-time, permanent, EHRA-Non Faculty position which requires occasional evening hours and non-standard hours.

Education and Experience:

Master's Degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs Administration, Counseling, Education, or a related field, along with 1-5 years of experience in functional areas related directly to or closely connected to the program coordinator position.

  • Experience establishing learning outcomes including developing and conducting assessments to determine success and improve and adapt programs.
  • Demonstrated engagement with internal and external campus partners to include alumni and donors.
  • Supervising the work of graduate assistants and/or undergraduate work study/intern students.
  • Familiarity with social media and other digital technology and their application in higher education settings.

Essential Skills:

The successful candidate must possess the following qualifications, competencies, and experiences:

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a departmental team and campus partners across a wide range of faculty, staff, and students.
  • Possess a skill set that reflects in-depth understanding of special student populations such as minoritized students, first-generation college students, rural students, etc.
  • Program development and management skills that utilize best practices and robust evaluation.
  • Strong organizational skills to prioritize work and needs of students in assigned caseload.
  • A solid understanding of the dynamic environment of the university setting with the ability to adapt to changing and uncertain conditions, while maintaining flexibility, composure, professionalism, and a positive attitude especially during these post-pandemic times.
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of various technology and software platforms such as Microsoft Office to complete tasks, along with university learning management systems to help students navigate the university.
  • Experience with student success software a plus.
  • A willingness to learn and expand current knowledge of platforms is required.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, skills, and experience in managing students' needs and expectations.
