Programme Manager - Interfaces Project (Part Time, Fixed Term)
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 3 years in the first instance.
The DeepMind Professorship is an endowed chair in Machine Learning at the University of Cambridge's Department of Computer Science and Technology. Machine learning is the technology underpinning the recent revolution in artificial intelligence. But unlike traditional artificial intelligence, machine learning technologies learn from data. This means the tools reflect more of the uncertainties and ambiguities underlying the data and importantly, can make significant errors. The interfaces project is about the interaction between the machine learning algorithms, traditional computer science and humans. The aim is to make sure we are building machine learning tools that capture and present their uncertainty in a calibrated manner to the human user.
We are seeking an experienced Programme Manager to lead the Interfaces Project, a strategic initiative aimed at producing research outputs that are actionable and meaningful for wider communities. The successful candidate will be responsible for planning, implementing, and managing all phases of the project to ensure timely delivery against clearly defined objectives. Through the development of robust workflows, operational systems, and collaborative engagement mechanisms such as workshops and strategic sessions, they will track progress, maintain accountability, and facilitate research productivity across the project.
This role demands a strong focus on stakeholder engagement. The Programme Manager will ensure active involvement from academic participants and empower them to meaningfully contribute to project deliverables. They will build and maintain effective relationships with internal and external partners, including industry collaborators, policymakers, practitioners, and community organisations. Their work will be essential in driving innovative collaboration and delivering outcomes with genuine societal impact. Central to their approach will be a commitment to open communication and shared understanding among all contributors.
The ideal candidate will be educated to degree level, or possess a Level 6 vocational qualification or equivalent experience. They will bring proven expertise in research administration, having previously established governance and monitoring systems that support high-performing research environments. Experience in financial oversight is essential, including budget preparation, expenditure tracking, and detailed reporting. Strong project management skills are crucial, with the ability to plan, monitor, and evaluate large-scale initiatives while managing multiple priorities to measurable outcomes. Proactivity, a keen problem-solving mindset, and the ability to work independently under pressure are key attributes for success in this role.
