Job Summary
The University of North Georgia is currently accepting applications for a Public Safety Compliance Coordinator. The Public Safety Compliance Specialist is a sworn law enforcement professional responsible for the management of departmental records, compliance oversight, and support of state certification and professional standards. This role serves as the department's Primary Records Custodian and Open Records Coordinator, ensures compliance with Georgia Crime Information Center (GCIC) regulations, and prepares statistical reporting for internal and external stakeholders. The Compliance Specialist contributes significantly to the department's State Certification efforts through the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police (GACP), working to ensure that policies, procedures, and operational practices align with current certification standards and best practices in law enforcement. The position assists in the development, review, and implementation of departmental policies and procedures that support legal compliance, accountability, and continuous improvement. This role requires a high degree of independence, discretion, and professional judgment. The incumbent must maintain active Georgia POST Law Enforcement Certification, swear by and adhere to the law enforcement oath of office, and uphold the integrity and ethical standards of the department at all times.
Responsibilities
Accreditation and Certification
- Assists in coordinating departmental efforts to maintain State Certification through the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police (GACP).
- Maintains awareness of evolving standards, updates policy manuals, and manages proof of compliance documentation.
- Supports inspections and assessment visits, and ensures continuous readiness for accreditation reviews.
- Coordinates training records, personnel certifications, and internal audits related to compliance functions.
- Serves as a resource to sworn and non-sworn personnel regarding compliance obligations and records-related procedures.
Records Management
- Serves as the Primary Records Custodian for the department, overseeing the accurate maintenance, storage, and retention of police reports, citations, arrest records, and case files.
- Implements best practices for records security, confidentiality, and accessibility.
- Ensures compliance with local, state, and federal laws regarding records retention and dissemination.
- Acts as the department's Open Records Coordinator, managing the intake, processing, and timely fulfillment of Georgia Open Records Act requests.
- Coordinates with legal counsel and other departments as needed to ensure lawful release of information.
Policy and Procedure Development
- Recommends policy updates and revisions based on compliance requirements and certification standards.
- Assists in the creation and revision of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), ensuring alignment with legal mandates and best practices.
Statistical Reporting
- Collects and compiles crime and activity data for submission to agencies such as the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) and National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS), the University System of Georgia, and internal stakeholders.
- Generates internal reports for department leadership and supports transparency and accountability efforts.
GCIC Compliance
- Maintains departmental compliance with GCIC/NCIC rules and regulations regarding access to criminal justice information.
- Conducts internal audits, coordinates user training and certification, and serves as a liaison with GCIC officials during inspections or inquiries.
Performs related duties as required or assigned.
