INTRODUCTION
UConn’s Facilities Operations Department has four job openings, for QCW Plumber/Steamfitters at the Storrs Campus. A current State of Connecticut P-1 or P-2 license is required. These are permanent, full-time, positions 37.5 hours per week.
The hourly salary is $31.86/hour and is non-negotiable for those new to State Employment; the hourly rate of pay for current NP-2 employees is calculated based on current salary/step.
These positions are categorized as “Open to the Public”; current UConn NP-2 employees will be given preference in the hiring process. The following are the current work schedules and locations this announcement is recruiting for:
- 1st Shift Plumbing Shop: Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Supervisor: Jason Grivois
- 1st Shift Plumbing Shop: Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Supervisor: Jason Grivois
- 1st Shift Plumbing Shop: Sunday - Thursday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Supervisor: Jason Grivois
- 2nd Shift Evening Trades Shop: Sunday - Thursday, 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., Supervisor: John Baldesweiler
The 2nd shift position is eligible for shift differential. Weekend differential is applied to hours worked on Saturday or Sunday, on both 1st and 2nd shift positions, if the entire 7.5 hour shift is worked.
This job search will be utilized to backfill any vacancies that are created by internal lateral transfers that occur in the Plumbing Shop or Evening Trades Shop. Current UConn NP-2 QCW Plumbing employees will be contacted via email in advance of the job search closing date to be provided with an opportunity to select a new work schedule through lateral transfer. A QCW Plumbing Lateral Moves to Vacancies meeting will be scheduled for any current UConn NP-2 QCW Plumbing employees that respond in writing to confirm their interest in a lateral transfer to a new work schedule. The QCW Plumbing Lateral Moves to Vacancies meeting will provide an opportunity for UConn QCW Plumbing employees to select from the positions listed above AND for any backfill vacancies that may become available as a result of additional lateral transfers that take place during the meeting. Vacancies may become available in either the Plumbing Shop or the Evening Trades Shop and may include but are not limited to: 1st Shift Monday – Friday, 1st Shift Tuesday – Saturday, 1st Shift Sunday – Thursday, 2nd Shift Monday – Friday, 2nd Shift Tuesday – Saturday, and 2nd Shift Sunday – Thursday.
These positions are categorized as Emergency Support Services/Essential Staff. Must be willing and able to work during emergency closures/delayed openings due to inclement weather or for significant events that affect campus operations.
Applicants must also be willing to respond to emergencies on overtime (nights, weekends or holidays).

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Performs highly skilled tasks in accordance with standard plumbing and steamfitting trade practices and codes;
- Assembles, installs and repairs air, gas, water, steam and sewer disposal systems;
- Cuts, bends, reams and threads pipes;
- Caulks and tests joints;
- Installs and repairs gas, water, steam and sanitary fixtures;
- Covers and insulates tanks, pipes and related objects;
- Works with high pressure hot water and steam systems;
- Performs minor tests for fuel specific gravity and gas leaks;
- Adds water treatment chemicals to boilers;
- Makes estimates of time, personnel and determines and obtains required materials on assigned tasks;
- Keeps necessary records;
- May braze pipes;
- May inspect and repair steam traps and/or vaults fed by main system at various locations;
- May remove pipe insulation materials associated with the repair of pipes and fittings using OSHA approved methods;
- May inspect and repair medical gas systems;
- May perform duties related to similar trade areas as required;
- May act as liaison with other operating units and outside contacts;
- May operate heavy equipment;
- May respond to fire and/or crash emergency situations at state owned airports;
- Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Two (2) years of the General Experience must have been performing skilled plumbing and steamfitting trades.
NOTE: For state employees this experience is interpreted at the level of a Skilled Maintainer or Transportation Maintainer 2.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
- Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma designating completion of subject requirements in a maintenance trade area may be substituted for two (2) years of the General Experience.
- At the University of Connecticut: Satisfactory performance and completion of the UConn Facilities Internship Training Program may be substituted for the General and Special Experience as determined by UConn Facilities Operations and Human Resources Management.
- At other state agencies: Two (2) years of experience as a Qualified Craft Worker Trainee in a designated maintenance trade area may be substituted for the General and Special Experience.
- Experience performing technical duties within the plumbing and steamfitting trade area on a military base, aircraft carrier or large compound may be substituted for the General and Special Experience on a year for year basis.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- University of Connecticut: Incumbents in this class are required to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications including possession and retention of a State of Connecticut plumbing and pipefitting license.
- Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess or acquire and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.
- Incumbents in this class must have a current State of Connecticut P-1 or P-2 License.
- Incumbents in this class must have the ability to read and interpret mechanical blueprints for building and utility systems.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Incumbents must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity to perform duties. A physical examination may be required. Must drive/operate various motor vehicles. Must be able to lift up to 75 lbs., climb ladders, enter confined spaces, etc.
WORKING CONDITIONS
May lift heavy weights, use protective equipment, exposed to risks. May require hazardous materials training.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Five or more years of experience performing a wide range of tasks in the plumbing and steamfitting trade.
