QUT Is Hiring an Accreditations Manager: What the Role Actually Involves

The job sits where external standards meet a university's legal right to teach.

QUT University Jobs on Academic Jobs

Queensland University of Technology (QUT) has put a specific name on a job that usually sits quietly inside a university's quality and standards unit. The Accreditations Manager position is open now through QUT's recruitment portal, and the same opening is listed on AcademicJobs.com. If you've worked in course approvals, professional body submissions or university governance, this is a job title to take seriously.

The role has less public profile than a lecturer or a dean, but it carries real influence over what a university can legally teach. Every course QUT offers has to satisfy someone outside the university—a professional body, a state regulator, the national quality agency, or a combination of all three. The person appointed here coordinates those obligations and the documentation that proves the university is meeting them.

For candidates who like structure, evidence and fixed deadlines, that's a clear advantage. For anyone who thinks accreditation is just a formality, the job will correct that impression within the first review cycle.

What an Accreditations Manager actually does

On most days you're not writing curriculum. You're checking whether the documentation supports what a faculty wants to deliver.

  • maintaining a calendar of accreditation cycles, re-accreditation deadlines and panel visits across the university
  • preparing self-assessments, evidence files and site visit briefings for external review panels
  • advising academic units on conditions, recommendations and required changes after a review
  • tracking responses from professional bodies, TEQSA and internal audit
  • supporting governance committees with reports and risk summaries

The work is deadline-driven because the consequences are real. A missed re-accreditation can delay a cohort's ability to register as nurses, teachers, engineers or other registered professionals, so the role sits close to student outcomes even when it doesn't sit in a classroom.

You also have to manage different timelines at once. One program may be in the middle of a site visit while another is six months from a submission date and a third is waiting on conditions from a professional body; a fourth may be in early curriculum planning. The successful candidate is the person who can hold all of that without letting a single thread drop.

Two layers of accreditation shape the workload

Australian higher education runs on two linked systems. The Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) registers providers under the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency Act 2011 and oversees compliance with the Higher Education Standards Framework (Threshold Standards) 2021. The Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) sets the national levels for regulated qualifications, from certificates to doctoral degrees.

Then there are the professional bodies. A nursing program needs accreditation from the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council before graduates can register. Engineering programs answer to Engineers Australia. Teacher education programs are endorsed through state and territory teacher regulatory authorities. Business and law programs carry their own set of professional recognitions.

Accreditation, in this context, is the formal approval that a course meets an external standard. It's not the same as internal course approval, which is the university's own process for saying a new subject can run. Confusing the two is common, and it's the kind of mistake this role exists to prevent.

For a large Brisbane university with campuses at Gardens Point and Kelvin Grove, that means the Accreditations Manager rarely works with one rulebook. You may spend Monday preparing a TEQSA-related return, Wednesday checking an engineering accreditation condition, Friday briefing a faculty on what a nursing panel will ask, and the rest of the week chasing missing evidence.

What the role isn't

An Accreditations Manager is not simply auditing paperwork. The job involves judgement about how to present a course to an external panel, when to push back on a faculty timeline, and what evidence will satisfy a regulator without over-volunteering information.

That judgement comes from seeing accreditation cycles end to end. If you've only ever completed one section of a submission, this role will stretch you across the whole sequence.

Accreditation focuses on whether a course meets an external standard. Compliance checks whether a policy is followed. Security protects information and systems. The jobs touch each other, but interview panels will expect you to know the difference.

QUT Uni Jobs on Academic Jobs

What makes a strong candidate

The people who perform well in this kind of role are not necessarily former academics. They're usually process thinkers who can translate a standard into a checklist and then into a convincing submission.

  • experience in university quality assurance, governance or a professional accreditation secretariat
  • working knowledge of TEQSA requirements and at least one professional accreditation framework
  • ability to read a standards document and map it to the right evidence
  • clear, neutral writing for committee papers and external panel reports
  • stakeholder management across faculties, central units and external assessors

You're not expected to know every professional body's rulebook on day one. You are expected to learn fast, keep records straight, treat deadlines as fixed, and ask when you don't understand a standard. The strongest applicants can point to a re-accreditation they managed from the first notice through to the final panel report, including what went wrong and how they fixed it.

If your background is in teaching or research alone, you'll need to show how you've handled compliance, course approval or regulatory reporting. The evidence matters more than the job title you currently hold.

How to apply for the QUT role

Start with the position description, not with a generic cover letter. The selection criteria are the marker's guide.

  • map your experience to each criterion before you write anything
  • prepare one specific example for each accreditation review or submission you've managed
  • check the closing date and contact officer details in the ad
  • submit through QUT's e-recruitment portal

The listing on AcademicJobs.com points to the same QUT application, so you can use either route to reach the full advertisement.

Before you submit, save a copy of your responses. Interview panels for this type of role tend to ask questions that mirror the selection criteria, and you'll want the examples fresh.

Why accreditation work keeps getting heavier

Universities have to show evidence, not just intentions. TEQSA publishes compliance decisions and regulatory reports, and professional bodies have tightened their evidentiary expectations across successive review cycles. A course approval that used to be internal now has to survive external scrutiny, condition-setting, evidence requests and follow-up reporting.

The result is a shift from accreditation as an occasional administrative task to a continuous function. That's why roles with 'accreditation' or 'quality and standards' in the title are appearing more often across Australian university job boards.

For the person sitting in the QUT chair, that shift means less quiet time between cycles and more forward planning. The best Accreditations Managers build a rolling calendar at least eighteen months out, because panel dates and evidence deadlines have a way of colliding.

Where this job can take you

Accreditations Manager roles often serve as a bridge to executive university administration. From here, people move into director of quality and standards, academic registrar or governance roles because the work teaches you how the institution actually runs at the point where teaching, law and external accountability meet.

That progression depends on more than technical knowledge. You need to show you can advise a dean without making an enemy, and write a submission that an external panel can follow without asking forty clarifying questions. Both skills show up quickly in an interview.

What to do this week

Open the QUT position description and put the closing date in your calendar before you do anything else. If the ad lists a contact officer, use that contact early with a precise question about the role, not a generic request for information.

Then compare your last three accreditation or quality assurance outcomes to the selection criteria. If you can't point to a specific result for each one, gather the evidence now so you're not drafting from memory on the day before the deadline.

The candidates who get shortlisted are usually the ones who can show they've run the process end to end. Don't wait for the interview to start finding your proof.

Frequently Asked Questions

Professional. You don't teach or research. You work in university governance and quality assurance, usually alongside academic and professional staff in a central portfolio.

📄What qualifications do I need for an Accreditations Manager position?

Relevant experience matters more than a particular degree. Many candidates come from university quality units, professional accreditation bodies, or roles in governance and compliance. A bachelor degree is usually expected, and a postgraduate qualification in higher education or public policy can help but is rarely mandatory.

🏛️What professional bodies does QUT deal with?
