Job Summary
It’s a transformational time to be a part of the University of Wisconsin! The Radiation Oncology Physics Section at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health, Department of Human Oncology, is seeking a medical physicist to join our team of 24 physicists, 6 physics residents, and medical physics assistants. The successful candidate will participate in high-level clinical development and application of radiation oncology imaging, treatment planning, and delivery systems to further high precision advancements in treatment options and patient care.
Our department is vibrant and growing with the Fall 2024 opening of our dual-hub UW Health Cancer Center, Eastpark Medical Center location, located on Madison's east side. The 469,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility and introduced two new Varian TrueBeams, and a Varian Edge, Elekta Flexitron Remote Afterloader coupled with Siemens multi-energy CT on rails. While beyond the scope of the present job description, proton therapy via a Hitachi gantry room and fixed beam room with first-of-kind upright patient positioning system will be offered at the Eastpark location.
In addition to the services provided at our Eastpark location, the UW Health University campus currently includes a Viewray MRIdian Linac with daily online adaptive radiation therapy, three Varian TrueBeams (one STx), an AccuRay Tomotherapy HDA, and two Elekta Flexitron Remote Afterloaders. We offer a broad range of special procedures, including SRS/SBRT, TBI, TSE, and brachytherapy for a wide range of treatment sites (e.g., GYN, breast, prostate) with MRI-guided planning and BodyTom CT for image verification. Advanced simulation capabilities are routinely integrated into clinical practice including Siemens dual-energy computed tomography and 1.5 T GE MR-simulator units. Automated planning/scripting is employed via robust use of RayStation coupled with MIM. Two additional satellite locations with modern technology and integrated clinical practices are included in our clinical coverage model with flexibility in work location possibly required based on clinical needs and candidate skillsets.
Additional academic responsibilities, based on the candidate's interests and accomplishments, will include research and teaching activities in alignment with the programmatic goals of the department. UW is a state-of-the-art integrated clinical, research, and training facility, ranked number 1 in Wisconsin in the U.S. News & World Report for the 11th consecutive year, that continually invests in the latest technological advancements. Access to ample preclinical/clinical research imaging and therapeutic systems (Xstrahl SARRP, FLASH, etc.) are available. Current active research programs include adaptive radiation therapy, theranostics, artificial intelligence, normal-tissue toxicity assessment, advanced imaging, and automated treatment planning/scripting. Interactions with the Department of Medical Physics Graduate Program and undergraduate outreach programs are strongly supported and encouraged.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must be certified or board eligible in Therapeutic/Radiation Oncology Medical Physics by the American Board of Radiology, the American Board of Medical Physics, or the Canadian College of Medical Physics.
In addition, experience performing quality assurance of and clinical support for conventional linear accelerator systems, brachytherapy with HDR remote after-loaders and unsealed sources, radiation dosimetry measurement equipment, radiotherapy treatment planning systems, advanced computed tomography imaging, magnetic resonance imaging, and experimental data acquisition and analysis is desirable. Applications will be considered from all career stages with areas of expected near-term growth in the following domains:
- Artificial intelligence
- MRI simulation in radiation therapy
- Theranostics/radiopharmaceutical dosimetry
- Proficiency with a broad range of clinical software systems is required, as are excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Online adaptive radiation therapy
For appointment at Associate Professor rank on CHS Track, candidates will meet criteria established by the department and as outlined in the School of Medicine and Public Health guidelines for promotion or appointment to Associate Professor on the CHS Track.
Education:
Ph.D. in Medical Physics or closely related field
