Children's Emergency Services (CES) is a primary entry point for children 0-20 years of age admitted to CS Mott Children's Hospital, a verified Level One pediatric trauma center and tertiary facility with referrals from across the state. We have been awarded the Lantern Award for nursing excellence.
We are a state of the art, 41 bed pediatric emergency department including 6 bed observation unit located in the new children's hospital.
CES nurses partner with board certified pediatric emergency medicine faculty and pediatric residents to provide expert family centered care for over 40,000 children who present each year with injuries and illness across the range of acuity from minor to critical care.
The department provides CES nurses financial support for ENPC, ACLS, PALS, TNCC and CPEN as well as in-depth orientation and continuing education.
This position is approximately six (6) months total interval spaced internship program, which prepares the new Graduate Nurses for a RN position in the Children's Emergency Services (CES). Orientation includes a combination of classroom and precepted clinical experience. A two year commitment to CES is required after the completion of the internship program. During the internship, Graduate Nurses may work day shift, evening shift, or night shift depending on preceptor availability. Shift assignment will occur after successful completion of the internship.

This is a fast-paced, challenging position in an academic environment fully committed to maintaining EXCELLENCE in family centered pediatric emergency care.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES include:
- Providing safe and efficient nursing care to children of all ages and pediatric specialties experiencing an emergent or urgent situation.
- Assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating the care of the pediatric emergency patient.
- Providing Patient & Family Centered Care through collaboration with all members of the health care team in order to meet complex care requirements of the emergency pediatric population.
- Demonstrates competence in the implementation of technical skills required for the care of the pediatric emergency patient according to UMHS policies, procedures, and standards.
- Demonstrates critical thinking skills as evidenced by the utilization of a rapid decision making process in emergency situations.
- Demonstrates full compliance with practices in documentation while providing pediatric emergency care.
- Assumes leadership responsibilities in teamwork and pediatric patient care delivery.
- Demonstrates awareness of the importance of research and evidence based practice in the care of the emergency pediatric patient.
- Identifies and assumes responsibility for one's own learning needs.
- Actively participates in quality improvement projects and initiatives related to the care of the pediatric emergency patient.
Required Qualifications:
- Successful completion of an accredited BSN program
- The candidate must be a Graduate Nurse or newly licensed in the State of Michigan as a Registered Nurse. The candidate must not have yet practiced as a Registered Nurse.
- Successful completion of the NCLEX must occur no later than 45 days from the individual start date for those hired as a Graduate Nurse.
- Successful candidate must obtain ACLS and PALS during orientation and obtain Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC) and Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) certification within 6 months post orientation to maintain the position. These will be obtained through UMHS Emergency Department.
- Must be able to start the Internship February 19, 2026

Desired Qualifications:
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are desired
- Experience as an Emergency Department, ICU Tech, or a Paramedic is desired
- Overall GPA of 3.5 or higher is desired
Salary & Nursing Framework Level:
This UMPNC RN posting is posted as Nursing Framework LEVEL C.
Actual Nursing Framework LEVEL and salary will be determined at time of hire.
Nursing Framework levels range from Level A to Level F.
Internship candidates will have a 5% payrate deduction while in the Internship per the UMPNC contact

Hours per week: 40
Shift: 8 & 12-hour shifts to be determined at end of internship; two of four weekends per four week scheduling period.

All new employees will be expected to float to a designated unit(s) in times of low census.
This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Michigan Nurses Association and the U-M Professional Nurse Council union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
