Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:
The mission of the Abrons Student Health Center (SHC) is to provide student centered affordable, quality health and preventive services to the students of UNCW. The SHC provides comprehensive medical services and a retail pharmacy, all with a focus on student success and patient education. The Health Center's goal is to help students stay as healthy as possible so they can fully engage in the classroom.

Brief Summary of Work for this Position:
The Registered Nurse functions as a member of a clinical team in the provision of healthcare in a fast-paced college health center. Responsibilities include obtaining pertinent medical information during check-in; educating patients; providing care and treatment consistent with nursing practice and theory; administering Immunizations and allergy shots; and performing basic laboratory tests. The nurse must demonstrate the ability to accurately assess a patient's medical condition and may assume a lead role in the clinic whenever necessary.Additional responsibilities include serving in the nurse triage rotation, providing backup support to laboratory services, including the performance and processing of commonly ordered clinic tests. The nurse also performs key administrative tasks such as processing referrals in coordination with the medical records unit, assisting with prior authorizations for insurance, and supporting an assigned physician or mid-level provider through patient communication, care coordination, sharing normal lab results, and facilitating follow-up. The nurse may also draft forms for provider review and approval, including emergency department and communicable disease documentation.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
License to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of North Carolina.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing from an accredited school of professional nursing
  • Experience working in a college health setting
  • Experience triaging patients
  • Experience administering allergy shots
  • Experience administering immunizations
  • Experience performing basic laboratory and point of care tests

Required Certifications or Licensures:

  • Must be licensed to practice as a registered nurse in North Carolina, by the NC Board of Nursing
  • Current CPR certification required with 3 months of hire

FTE: 1.0 FTE (40 hours per week)
Months Per Year: 12J (July-June)
Work Days: Monday - Friday
Work Hours: 8:00 - 5:00, occasionally may need to stay late for patient care
