Research Administration Officer

About This Opportunity

We’re looking for a skilled professional to contribute to the leadership and efficient operations of the School’s Research Administration Office. In this pivotal role, you’ll work closely with the Director of Research and School Manager to provide high-level research administration and project management support—particularly across pre- and post-award research grant activities. In this role you will work closely with a team of Principal Research Administration Officers who all contribute to the overall success of research administration in the School.

Key responsibilities will include:

Strategic Support

  • Contribute to the leadership and management of the Research Administration Office within the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS).
  • Provide strategic support and advice to the Director of Research and School Manager as required.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development of the School’s Research Strategy and associated actions.
  • In consultation with the Director of Research, Head of School, and Research Committee, develop and maintain school policies, guidelines and procedures in relation to research activity and research administration within the School.
  • Maintain an expert understanding of the School’s research activities, its strategic objectives, as well as external research issues including University and external initiatives.
  • Maintain an expert understanding of research funding complexities to maximise the response to grant and funding opportunities, including expertise in the rules and procedures applicable to external funding agencies.
  • Develop initiatives to promote the School’s research output and to assist researchers to target appropriate funding schemes.
  • Create strong relationships with Discipline Leaders and academic staff in the School to better understand their research objectives.

Research Administration

  • Advise and assist staff with grant applications & develop processes to maintain accurate records of grant application activity to enable tracking and internal reporting.
  • Work collaboratively with the other members of the team to ensure that all research administration processes are efficient and effective.
  • Support researchers with budgeting and ethical clearance.
  • Coordinate the promotion of research grant funding and research events.
  • Coordinate research grant approvals and coordination of research seminars when required.
  • Provide administrative support and guidance to the Research Committee.
  • Liaise with internal and external stakeholders on research grants and strategic objectives.
  • Analyse research performance and assist with budget administration.
  • Participate in research-related networks and events.

About You

  • A degree plus at least four (4) years subsequent relevant work experience or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education and/or training.
  • Experience in an area of research administration in a university.
  • Knowledge and understanding of policies and procedures relating to research and general administration in the tertiary education sector and external funding agencies, or the ability to rapidly acquire this knowledge.
  • Excellent organisational and problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • High level analytical, interpretative and research skills including database administration and compilation of statistical information relevant to research.
  • Demonstrated ability to set own priorities, monitor work processes, meet regular deadlines, and work both independently and collaboratively as part of a busy team.
  • High level of interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills, able to exercise tact and good judgment, and to negotiate with a range of individuals including senior staff of the University.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the provision of high-quality customer service.

The successful candidate may be required to complete several pre-employment checks, including right to work in Australia.
