The Optical Nanomaterials Group at the University of Cambridge is seeking a highly motivated Research Associate to perform photocatalytic experiments involving novel earth-abundant plasmonic structures. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to world-leading research, with a focus on the development of innovative nanomaterials for catalysis.

The successful candidate will prepare manuscripts for publication in high-impact journals and present findings at national and international conferences. You will support the University's ongoing research excellence and may assist in grant administration and reporting to funding bodies. Additionally, you will contribute to the wider activities of the Optical Nanomaterials Group, fostering collaboration and innovation.

Key Responsibilities

Research and Scholarship

  • Develop research objectives and proposals independently or collaboratively
  • Conduct individual and team-based research projects
  • Prepare research for publication and presentation
  • Stay updated with advancements in the field by reviewing literature
  • Translate recent advances into research activities
  • Manage research and administrative tasks with appropriate guidance
  • Communicate complex scientific material effectively.

Teaching and Learning Support

  • Assist in supervising student research projects
  • Support students in developing essential research skills

Liaison and Networking

  • Collaborate with colleagues and students within the department
  • Establish internal and external research networks to exchange knowledge and build future partnerships

Planning and Organisation

  • Plan and manage research resources, laboratories, and workshops
  • Oversee personal research activities in collaboration with colleagues
  • Contribute to the planning of joint research projects led by the principal investigator

Candidate Specification

Specialist Knowledge & Skills

  • Expertise in gas-phase heterogeneous catalysis. Experience in catalytic conversion of CO2 and light hydrocarbons is advantageous
  • Experience in supported metal/metal oxide catalyst synthesis and characterisation
  • Experience in nanoscale engineering of multi-metallic catalytic systems
  • Understanding of photocatalysis principles, including mechanisms and reactor design. Familiarity with plasmonic catalysis is advantageous

Experience

  • Research experience acquired during or post-PhD
  • Hands-on experience in a research laboratory environment
  • Demonstrated leadership in research, such as first-author publications
  • Proven track record of publishing in peer-reviewed international journals
  • Involvement in training and mentoring student researchers

Qualifications

  • PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related discipline

Additional Requirements

  • The ability to design, execute, optimise, and interpret experiments
  • Strong planning and workload management skills
  • Excellent communication skills and a collaborative team spirit
