About the role
This post is part of the Fleming Initiative’s Grand Challenges, focussed on mitigating the critical threat of antibiotic resistance to public health. This position is a key role within a large metagenomic surveillance project that will synthesise different types of samples to understand the interconnected dynamics of viruses, bacteria and fungi across communities and health systems.
The aim of the work is to understand the key drivers of antibiotic prescribing and resistance, to inform improvements to relevant policy and treatment guidelines.
What you would be doing
The role will involve developing novel mathematical frameworks for understanding the distribution of resistance across pathogens, to estimate the potential for different interventions to reduce infections by difficult-to-treat microbes. These models will need to be capable of integrating multiple data streams, including genomic, epidemiological, clinical and environmental information.
What we are looking for
We are seeking an individual with experience of modelling complex pathogen dynamics. Experience of fitting models to noisy data will be highly beneficial. Candidates with an enthusiasm for microbial evolution and ecology, and a motivation to learn new skills and publish their results, are ideal for this position.
The successful applicant will be based within the MRC Centre for Global Infectious Disease Analysis, a centre of excellence for mathematical modelling and pathogen epidemiology. They will work closely with project partners at the Wellcome Sanger Institute, who are world leaders in the analysis of genomic data.
Therefore, this position will offer extensive opportunities for building collaborations, learning new skills, and generating results to inform public health policy.
What we can offer you
- The opportunity to continue your career at a world-leading institution and be part of our mission to continue science for humanity.
- Grow your career: gain access to Imperial’s sector-leading dedicated career support for researchers as well as opportunities for promotion and progression.
- Sector-leading salary and remuneration package (including 41 days off a year and generous pension schemes).
- Be part of a diverse, inclusive and collaborative work culture with various staff networks and resources to support your personal and professional wellbeing.
