Job Summary
The College of Veterinary Medicine is hiring for a Research Assistant to join our team!
This position provides administrative and professional support to research programs and projects at Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine. Responsible for equipment, materials, and support of laboratory operations. Provides routine support of protocols/plans, documentation, observation, sample and data collection. Records, processes, interprets and presents data.
Work includes receiving and archiving biological specimens in -80 freezer, nucleic acid extractions, electrophoresis, sequencing library preparations, PCR, quantitative PCR, quality control using TapeStation, fluorimeters, and spectrophotometers, as well as other genomics lab tasks. Mine electronic medical records and link metadata with corresponding biospecimens. Work is performed under general guidance and is checked for compliance with protocols/plans; the incumbent is expected to make some independent judgments and decisions.
Effective communication skills are preferred for collaboration with other laboratories, departments within the College of Veterinary Medicine, as well as other partner institutions.
Essential Functions
- Assists in the development of project proposals, plans and protocols.
- Conducts routine or fundamental experiments, investigations and/or studies related to programs and projects in pursuit of new knowledge, techniques and concepts.
- Assists with logistical considerations to include equipment, materials, and labor needs.
- Collects data/samples related to others' research and in routine cases.
- Records, compiles, processes and analyzes data/samples.
- Documents results and observations in writing as well as presenting results to others.
- May assist in the preparation of research results for publication or presentation at conferences to include assisting in literature reviews and assisting in the writing of results and discussions.
- May instruct students and/or supervise others' research in area of expertise.

Minimum Qualifications
Level I:
- Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Sciences, Biological Sciences, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Animal Sciences, or other related discipline.
Level II:
- Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Sciences, Biological Sciences, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Animal Sciences, or other related discipline.
- 2 years of experience in research practices and protocols.
Minimum Skills and Abilities
- Possesses general knowledge in the field of research, and has working knowledge of equipment, materials and processes related to lab/facility operations, including procedures for observation, documentation and data collection.
- Regularly involves lifting, bending or other physical exertion. Often exposed to one or more elements such as heat, cold, noise, dust, dirt, chemicals, etc., with one often to the point of being objectionable. Injuries may require professional treatment.
- Routine deadlines; usually sufficient lead time; variance in work volume seasonal and predictable; priorities can be anticipated; some interruptions are present; involves occasional exposure to demands and pressures from persons other than immediate supervisor.
- Job frequently requires standing, sitting, handling objects with hands, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
- Vision requirements: Ability to see information in print and/or electronically.
Salary Range: $35,300 - $55,910
