In addition, they are using their expertise in interdisciplinary research centers across the university.

Carnegie Mellon University's department of Mechanical Engineering is searching for a Research Assistant to join their team. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who thrives in an interesting and challenging work environment. You will contribute to the department by providing support by collecting the required experimental data for determining the link between spatter particles and porosity in the laser powder bed fusion of metals (PBF-LB/M), working with professors and their teams to accomplish this goal.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborating with a multidisciplinary team
  • Communicate results through reports and weekly presentations
  • Planning and running experiments, tailored to complement existing data relating porosity to spatter landing sites
  • Analyzing data from experiments using Python
  • Train and validate machine learning model for processing data
  • Writing/submitting manuscript of work to academic journals for publication
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Preferred doctorate degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • 3-5 years of experience
  • Experience with data analysis
  • Experience with EOS M290 PBF-LB/M machine, using process monitoring sensors like infrared cameras and high-speed cameras
  • 4+ years of research in metal additive manufacturing space, whether industry or academic.
  • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
