The Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Hematology Oncology is recruiting for a Research Assistant to work in Dr. Sarah Skuli’s Lab.

The Skuli Lab is a basic/translational laboratory with a goal of developing new therapeutic strategies for patients with myeloid malignancies [acute myeloid leukemia (AML), myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS)], particularly those with mutations in the tumor suppressor, TP53, which currently portends a terminal prognosis. To achieve this goal, we aim to understand the molecular/cellular biology and mechanisms of therapy resistance of TP53 mutant MDS/AML with a particular focus on metabolism and the tumor microenvironment.

Essential Functions

  • Follow established research protocols to perform experiments in the lab.
  • Design laboratory experiments in coordination with senior laboratory personnel. Understand the scientific principles involved in the research and use those principles to troubleshoot and adjust the protocol as appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of all laboratory work and experiments.
  • Interpret data and assist in judging validity of data. May perform statistical and graphical analysis of data.
  • Operate standard laboratory equipment. Troubleshoot and correct erroneous results/problems with laboratory equipment and procedures.
  • Maintains optimal protocol and assay accuracy by conducting regular quality checks. Provides appropriate safety monitoring checks as assigned.
  • May assist in training post-doctoral fellows, graduate students and junior laboratory personnel in laboratory techniques and equipment.
  • Maintain inventory and stock of laboratory supplies (includes ordering), equipment, and cell cultures. Willing and able to assist in daily operations of the laboratory including organization and cleanliness.
  • Maintain an active role in laboratory meetings, presentations, publications, which includes contributing material for publications, abstracts and reports.
  • Assist with mouse-based in vivo experiments and may assist with animal colony management and animal husbandry.

Required Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Four (4) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of education requirement.

Required Experience

  • 1+ years of direct basic laboratory experience.
  • Experience with routine wet-lab techniques including mammalian cell culture, molecular biology assays (DNA/RNA/protein extraction/quantification, PCR, qPCR, western blotting, cloning/bacterial transformation), flow cytometry/cell sorting, colorimetric/fluorometric assays, Seahorse, and basic data analysis (Excel/GraphPad) is preferred. Training will be provided as needed.
  • Additional related work experience may be required depending on field or discipline.
