Research Assistant I

Position Summary

The Turfgrass Pathology program at Michigan State University is seeking a highly motivated individual to investigate turfgrass diseases, including their etiology, epidemiology, genetics, and integrated management strategies. This position will be an integral part of a team conducting field, laboratory, and greenhouse research to advance knowledge and understanding of turfgrass pathogens and diseases in Michigan.

The successful applicant will assist with field research and laboratory studies to meet research goals by designing and conducting experiments, collecting, recording, and analyzing data, and preparing reports to contribute to overall research and Extension goals. This includes operating, calibrating, and maintaining scientific instruments for both laboratory and field settings; culture propagation, maintenance, and disposal; preparing solutions and media; pesticide handling, weighing and application; turfgrass field plot maintenance using appropriate tools and equipment; handling, using, storing, and disposing of hazardous materials including, but not limited to, pesticides and other hazardous waste.

The individual is also expected to travel within the state of Michigan to conduct off-site trials. The individual will oversee compliance to laboratory safety regulations and procedures and order materials, supplies, and equipment. They will assist in identifying turfgrass diseases and isolating pathogens. Office activities will include statistical data analysis, technical report writing, and effective communication with MSU extension educators and collaborators within and outside of the state. Greenhouse activities will include maintaining research trials and data collection. The applicant is expected to make extension presentations at field days. The individual will be responsible for supervising undergraduate students.

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Plant Pathology, Turfgrass Science or other related science fields; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in standard laboratory procedures and safety requirements and performing analytical and research techniques in an area related to research being performed; may require software specific to the area of research; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Valid Vehicle Operator License
  • Michigan commercial pesticide applicator license with category 3A endorsement or obtain within 1 month of hire
  • Knowledgeable and safe handling and operation of turf maintenance equipment
  • Ability to conduct statistical analysis with SAS, R, or Agriculture Research Manager (ARM).

Desired Qualifications

Knowledge or experience in conducting turfgrass research; proficiency with golf turf equipment; experience with autonomous mowers and drone photography; knowledge of turf pathogen diagnostics; experience with website and database maintenance; highly organized, self-motivated, and excellent time management skills.

Summary of Physical Demands

  • Standing for more than 1 hour at a time, reaching overhead,
  • Lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs. of equipment
  • Pushing up to 25 lbs. fertilizer spreader 120 ft.
