Research Assistant II
Position Summary
The MSU Field Crops Pathology Program is seeking a motivated and highly organized Research Assistant to help manage, coordinate, and conduct disease-focused field research across Michigan’s major cropping systems. The Chilvers Field Crops Pathology Program investigates diseases of soybean, corn, wheat, barley, and dry bean—combining field and laboratory research to advance disease management strategies and improve crop productivity. The program utilizes advanced precision agriculture technologies, including GPS-guided planting and spraying equipment, and partners closely with industry and academic collaborators.
This position offers the opportunity to be part of a dynamic, hands-on research team working at the intersection of plant pathology, agronomy, and field operations. The successful candidate will play a central role in ensuring smooth coordination between field and laboratory efforts, contributing to impactful research outcomes that directly benefit Michigan growers.
Position Responsibilities:
- Work cohesively with the field and laboratory teams—including a field Research Assistant, lab Research Assistant, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers—to organize, design, plant, maintain, and harvest field research trials.
- Coordinate and conduct disease scouting, plant vigor assessments, and treatment evaluations throughout the growing season.
- Collect, organize, summarize, and analyze experimental data; contribute to reports, summaries, and extension materials.
- Maintain meticulous records of methods, materials, and experimental results to ensure research quality and reproducibility
- Communicate effectively and responsively with academic and industry collaborators regarding field trials, data collection, and results
- Supervise undergraduate students, train, and coordinate the activities of all lab personnel
- Assist with the calibration, operation, and maintenance of field equipment and instruments.
- Support ongoing research and extension projects through collaborative planning and execution
Minimum Requirements
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in the specific field of research employment such as Plant Pathology, Agronomy, Entomology, or other plant related science field; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in overseeing research projects and laboratory operations, operating and maintaining a variety of laboratory equipment, performing specialized and difficult analytical and research techniques, and designing research experiments in an area related to research being performed; will require to learn Genovix software specific to the area of research; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Additional Unit Specific Requirements:
- Obtaining Pesticide applicator license for field crops prior to the completion of the probationary period
- Valid vehicle operator’s license
- Knowledge of or ability to learn Genovix software to develop trials and analyze data
Desired Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Plant Pathology, Agronomy, Entomology or other Plant Science related fields
- Demonstrated proficiency in conducting field research, effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail to manage multiple ongoing projects across locations.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills to foster collaboration among farm crew, lab personnel, students, and faculty.
- Passion for field-based plant disease research and a willingness to work outdoors under varying conditions.
- Dependability and initiative in managing project logistics, data collection, and timelines.
- Commitment to safety and quality, including the responsible handling of agricultural chemicals and equipment.
