As a Research Assistant in the Professorial Unit of the Department of Psychiatry at The Melbourne Clinic, you will play a vital role in advancing psychiatric research. You will engage in patient recruitment, conduct clinical assessments, and manage data for trials focused on novel treatments for unipolar and bipolar depression. This position offers you the chance to collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, gain valuable research experience, and impact mental health care.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Conduct clinical research: recruit participants, conduct interviews, and administer psychiatric assessments.
  • Data Management and Analysis: Manage data entry, maintain research databases, and perform qualitative/ quantitative data analysis.
  • Ensure ethical standards: Monitor the ethical conduct of studies and implement risk assessment procedures.
  • Collaborate and communicate: Engage with research staff, contribute to publications, and present findings at conferences.

You may be a great fit if:

You will have a strong academic background in psychology or a related field, with excellent research and clinical skills, ready to contribute to psychiatric trials and collaborate within a multidisciplinary team.

You may also:

  • Possess a bachelor’s degree with honours or a postgraduate qualification in a related discipline.
  • Have experience in psychiatric clinical trials and psychopharmacology.
  • Demonstrate strong administrative skills and the ability to prioritise tasks effectively.
  • Be skilled in engaging with diverse stakeholders, including researchers, clinicians, and participants.
  • Hold a Good Clinical Practice (GCP) Certificate and a certificate in pathology for venepuncture and ECG.

Your new team – The Department of Psychiatry

The Department of Psychiatry at the University of Melbourne was established in the 1960s. It is one of the largest Departments in the Melbourne Medical School. There are about 140 academic and professional staff, 140 honorary staff and 50 students pursuing research degrees from Honours, Masters, and PhD programs. A further 240 students are enrolled in graduate coursework programs, including the flagship Master of Psychiatry program. The Department plays a key role in the medical curriculum of the graduate Doctor of Medicine (MD) program, providing rotations in mental health for medical students and teaching in other sections of the course. The Department also offers opportunities for students undertaking research projects in the MD course.
