Overview of the role:

We are seeking a motivated Research Assistant to join our team investigating in vitro-transcribed mRNA tools, high-throughput screening techniques, and advanced cell and animal models to support development of new cardiovascular disease therapeutics. You will join the MRC/BHF Centre of Research Excellence in Advanced Cardiac Therapies https://www.advancedcardiactherapies.ac.uk/, co-hosted at the Institute of Developmental and Regenerative Medicine (IDRM), University of Oxford, at which this role is based. You will be responsible for planning and conducting experiments, analysing and reporting their results to address the wider project aims, reporting to the Principal Investigator. You will work with other researchers to investigate new techniques in mRNA-based therapeutic development and disseminate findings via presentations and publication in journal articles. This post is available from 26th May 2026 and is fixed term for two years.

The ideal candidate will have a foundation in Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Pharmacology, or a similar field, demonstrated by a primary qualification (e.g. BSc) and biochemical laboratory experience. The ideal candidate will have a desire to learn new techniques and gain experience in multiple scientific disciplines which support drug discovery, such as chemistry, pharmacology, biotechnology, engineering biology, and medical science.

Candidates currently completing their BSc are encouraged to apply, provided the degree will be awarded before the post start date.

Key responsibilities:

  • Manage own research and administrative activities, within guidelines provided by senior colleagues.
  • Contribute to wider project planning, including ideas for new research projects.
  • Determine the most appropriate methodologies to test hypotheses, and identify suitable alternatives if technical problems arise.
  • Select, follow, and adapt experimental protocols.
  • Gather, analyse, and present scientific data from a variety of sources.

Selection criteria

Essential

  • Hold a First-Class or Upper 2:1 BSc degree in Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, or a similar discipline.
  • Experience conducting biochemical research in a laboratory setting.
  • Experience in molecular cloning & nucleic acid manipulation.
  • Technical ability (knowledge and experience) in molecular & cell biology.
  • Ability to communicate and relate to others (both oral and written).
  • Decision-making, problem-solving, planning and organisation skills.
  • Analysis and research – experience in developing hypotheses, planning experimental workflows, interpreting biochemical data and reporting results of experiments.

Desirable

  • Experience in RNA synthesis or RNA analysis methods.
  • Experience in mammalian cell culture.
  • Engineering biology knowledge or experience, such as in high-throughput instrumentation, microfluidics, and programming.
  • Experience or knowledge of preclinical drug discovery.
