Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 12 months.

The McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research invites applications for a fixed-term Research Associate in the Later Prehistory (4000-1000 BC) of the Mediterranean Maghreb. This is a fixed term appointment for 12 months.

The successful applicant will conduct field-oriented and desk-based archaeological research and publication on the later prehistory (ca. 4000-1000 BC) of the northern Maghreb, defined as the Mediterranean regions of Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia. They will be able to place their research in the broader context of western Mediterranean, and especially Iberian, later prehistory over the same timescale. They will conduct this research independently but under the general supervision and guidance of Professor Cyprian Broodbank, Disney Professor of Archaeology and Director of the McDonald Institute, whose recent research focuses on this region and period.

Evidence of extensive prior field experience, research and high-quality publication directly relating to the archaeology of these regions over the period 4000-1000 BC is an essential requirement for this position, preferably including some in a leadership role. Also essential is a high degree of reading and spoken fluency in Arabic, English, French and Spanish.

There is limited funding available for fieldwork, travel and other research expenses.

The post holder must have a PhD successfully examined, or to have submitted for examination at the point of application.

Candidates of north African nationality, heritage and/or identity will be especially welcome.

Starting date: November 1st 2025, or as soon as possible thereafter.

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment.
