Job Summary

As a Research Associate, in the Integrative Physiology of Aging Laboratory at the University of Colorado Boulder, you will be directing an NIH-funded lifestyle intervention study in human subjects assessing the ability of the intervention to lower blood pressure and improve vascular function in mid-life and older adults.You will work closely with the laboratory director, laboratory manager, postdoctoral associates, professional research associates, graduate and undergraduate students. As such, the ability to work both independently and as part of a team is essential.In this position, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with a world class team of integrative physiologists and clinicians.

Who We Are

The faculty roster for the Department of Integrative Physiology includes 16 tenured and tenure-eligible faculty and 13 instructor-rank faculty. Research in the Department spans the entire field of physiology, from the genetics of behavioral traits to the assessment of human performance and population health.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Clinical Duties: Subject Screening, Consent, and Enrollment:

  • Review screening forms to assess potential participants for eligibility based on specific study inclusion and exclusion criteria.
  • Obtain subject informed consent.
  • Review all participant forms related to inclusion and exclusion prior to enrollment and escalate matters for additional feedback as needed.
  • Forms include: medication list, medical history and physical exam summary, graded exercise test summary, and resting physiological data.

Data Collection:

  • Conduct experimental testing sessions.
  • Conduct experimental testing visits lasting between 90 minutes and 3 hours.
  • Assessments include: blood pressure, arterial stiffness, vascular ultrasound, transcranial doppler ultrasound, 24h blood pressure and activity monitoring, cognitive function testing.
  • Assist with data collection for other protocols as assigned.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for liaising with CU Boulder CTRC staff for any study-related issues.
  • Assist with adverse event management as needed.

Data Analysis:

  • Analyze vascular ultrasound data collected during experimental study visits.
  • Analyze 24h blood pressure and activity monitoring data.
  • Audit data that is analyzed by graduate trainees and staff as appropriate.
  • Perform statistical analyses as appropriate.

Data Management:

  • Maintain and audit the electronic data capture platform for the entire study protocol (REDCap).
  • Data validation of unverified data entered by other members of the research team.
  • Infrequent edits to study project within REDCap.
  • Maintain current data inventory for current and former subjects.
  • Maintain a current subject tracking spreadsheet for regulatory reporting and study progress.
  • Perform bi-weekly backups to ensure proper data storage and stewardship.
  • Delegate data analysis as appropriate.

Regulatory and Compliance:

  • Draft and revise study documents.
  • Study protocol.
  • Study Informed Consent.
  • Reportable event forms.
  • Bi-annual safety officer reports.
  • Act as study PI for regulatory documentation approval.
  • Using VeevaVault, serve as study PI for approving protocol-specific SOPs, work instructions, and study delegations.
  • Draft and propose edits to above documentation as appropriate.
  • Ensure that NIA CROMS compliance data are uploaded monthly with accurate study figures.

Supervising Duties: Graduate Student Mentorship:

  • Mentor 1-2 graduate trainees.
  • Oversee all aspects of assigned projects and analyses.
  • Conduct bi-annual review of revision of student TSP.
  • Weekly meetings to discuss research-related activities, progress, and barrier to success.
  • Provide intellectual feedback and guidance on presentations and written materials.
  • Hold regular physiology discussions to discuss and review key concepts in the field of cardiovascular physiology.

Staff Management:

  • Oversee a team of 5-8 undergraduate and graduate volunteers and 2-3 staff members.
  • Frequent troubleshooting and decision making for items related to subject eligibility and enrollment, scheduling, and progress.
  • Hold meetings to address study progress, roadblocks, identify action items, and delegate to team members where appropriate.

Team Training:

  • Serve as an instructor for training students and staff on research activities.
  • Draft, revise, and implement protocol-specific training in response to protocol amendments that impact intervention delivery.

What We Require

  • PhD in Physiology, Exercise Science or related field.
  • 2+ years of experience conducting clinical research studies involving an intervention.

What We Would Like You to Have

  • Experience managing a team.
  • Experience with blood processing and other biochemical techniques.
  • Sound knowledge of human cardiovascular physiology.
