Overview:

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver solutions to compelling problems in energy and security. The Biosciences Division of ORNL has an opening for a postdoctoral researcher to conduct basic research on plant genes and phenotypes foundational to developing sustainable biomass feedstocks. You will join a diverse, interdisciplinary team working to characterize plant traits and link them to genetic information under the Center for Bioenergy Innovation project.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

You will work within the Plant Systems Biology Group, which focuses on understanding genetic controls of plant productivity, biomass quality, and resilience. The project will involve improving biomass characteristics in poplar via genetic engineering, genome editing, and genomic selection.

Responsibilities include:

  • Phenotypic characterization of transgenic and genome-edited poplar lines
  • Molecular and biochemical assays (protein-DNA and protein-protein interactions)
  • Physiological assays for photosynthesis-related traits
  • Designing experiments and performing omics analyses (transcriptomics, metabolomics, proteomics)
  • Field data collection and sample gathering
  • Data acquisition, analysis, and project documentation
  • Presenting research at meetings and conferences
  • Publishing results in peer-reviewed journals
  • Compliance with environmental, safety, and quality standards

Basic Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in plant biology or related fields, completed within the last five years.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with molecular biology, plant physiological assays, and biochemical techniques
  • Omics data analysis skills
  • Experience working with woody perennial plants
  • Strong publication record and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and in a team

Special Requirements:

  • Ph.D. must be earned within 5 years of application.
  • Appointment length: up to 24 months, with potential extension based on performance and funding.
