Research Associate in Experimental Nuclear Physics

The University of Surrey is a global community of ideas and people, dedicated to life-changing education and research.

We are ambitious and have a bold vision of what we want to achieve - shaping ourselves into one of the best universities in the world, which we are achieving through the talents and endeavour of every employee.

Our culture empowers people to achieve this aim and to collectively, and individually, make a real difference.

The role

We are seeking a research associate in experimental nuclear physics to support our programmes in both nuclear structure physics and nuclear astrophysics. The successful candidate will join a large and diverse group of researchers covering nuclear structure physics, nuclear astrophysics, applications of nuclear physics and nuclear theory. The candidate's programme will focus on the overlap between nuclear structure and nuclear astrophysics and their responsibilities will include:

  • The analysis of experimental data acquired from both direct and indirect measurements
  • Dissemination of results at conferences and through publication in peer-reviewed journals
  • Participation in setting up and performing experiments at a number of international accelerator facilities
  • Participation in in-house detector testing and characterisation

About you

We are seeking a candidate with:

  • A PhD in experimental nuclear physics (or who is nearing completion of their PhD)
  • A proven track record of contributions in nuclear physics including the preparation of manuscripts for publication and conference contributions

In addition:

  • Experience with data analysis using the ROOT analysis package would be an advantage
  • Experience performing and analysing experiments with gamma-ray and charged-particle spectroscopy would be an advantage. Particularly knowledge of Coulomb excitation and/ or gamma-ray spectroscopy of exotic nuclei

How to apply

Please submit a CV and cover letter with your application on the University website.

The post holder will be a key member of the nuclear physics group at Surrey and their main contacts will be Prof. Daniel Doherty and Prof. Gavin Lotay.

Interviews will be held on Monday 22nd of September.

Surrey provides a range of training and development opportunities for its staff including access to a wide range of facilities.
