Position Function
The Research Associate will work under the supervision of Professor Abigail Snyder in the Department of Food Science. The role involves advanced quantitative and microbiological research, data analysis, modeling, and bioinformatics, as well as mentoring students and contributing to manuscript development.
Major Research Areas
The Research Associate will contribute to projects including:
- Modeling of cross-contamination
- Quantitative microbial risk assessment
- Covalent organic framework development
- Genomic data analysis
- Statistical analysis and experimental design for produce and dairy industries
- Meta-analyses and systematic reviews
The role requires designing research studies, conducting experiments (primarily computational), analyzing data, managing digital lab resources, developing proposals, publishing in high-impact journals, and presenting findings at conferences.
Key Responsibilities
Research (80%)
- Design and conduct experiments in computational biology
- Perform advanced data analysis and quantitative modeling
- Write grant proposals and contribute to competitive funding applications
- Prepare manuscripts and reports for publication
- Develop new research ideas and experimental approaches
Mentoring (15%)
- Support and mentor graduate students in data analysis, experimental design, and scientific writing
- Provide virtual or in-person guidance as needed
Writing & Reporting (5%)
- Prepare papers, reports, and supporting documents for peer-reviewed journals and funding agencies
Required Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Food Science, Data Science, Microbiology, or a related field
- Minimum one year of postdoctoral experience
- Demonstrated ability to work independently
- Experience with advanced quantitative methods
- Strong background in microbiology/food safety
- Extensive wet-lab experience in chemistry and synthesis
- Proven publication record in high-impact journals
- Experience writing research proposals and securing funding
- Excellent mentoring, analytical, and communication skills
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, and teamwork abilities
Supervision
- The position is supervised by Professor Abigail Snyder
- No supervisory responsibilities
