About the Position
The Research Associate will be a key member of the Southern Shark Ecology Group, contributing to research projects focused on shark and ray ecology. This position combines fieldwork, data analysis, and supervision of research students, offering opportunities to work with large marine predators and advance cutting-edge marine science.
In this position, you will:
- Plan and lead high-quality, innovative research field trips in shark ecology
- Analyse and write up large BRUVS and acoustic tracking datasets
- Contribute to the supervision of research students
- Develop and maintain strategic relationships with industry, professional associations and stakeholders
About You
You are a highly motivated marine ecologist with strong field experience and a passion for shark and ray research. You bring excellent analytical skills, hands-on expertise with large marine predators, and a collaborative, proactive approach to research.
You demonstrate:
- Completion of a PhD, or significant progress towards a PhD in marine ecology, marine science, environmental sciences or related field
- Strong research track record including publications and experience attracting competitive funding
- Coxswain certificate with experience operating boats >7 m
- Experience handling and tagging large sharks
- Divemaster (or equivalent) diving certification and up-to-date CPR/oxygen provider and first aid certifications
- Experience using and analysing BRUVS and acoustic tracking data
- Proficiency in R and statistical modelling (e.g., GLMM, GAMM, species distribution models)
