Job Description Summary
This position will represent the Health and BioBehavior Laboratory (HaBBLab) in the Anthropology Department at the University of Pennsylvania. The HaBBLab seeks to research human adaptation & acclimation, stress & resilience, energetic physiology, neuroendocrine systems & behavior, human variation & plasticity. The lab develops projects centering the biological anthropology subfield of human biology, focusing on human biobehavioral changes related to stress and resilience in novel, energy-intensive, and extreme environments. Recent work is exploring the protective effects of social support in harsh and unpredictable contexts. Research sites are varied and include Philadelphia and South Africa.
Job Description
Anthropology is the key to the contemporary curriculum. Our courses are cross-listed in a variety of other departments: disciplinary, such as English, History, Linguistics, Biology, Psychology, and Religious Studies; areal, such as East Asian Studies, Latin American and Latino Studies, Near East Studies, African Studies, Africana Studies, and South Asian Studies; and professional schools and centers, such as Education, Design, Law, Wharton, Annenberg, Medicine, Nursing, Social Policy and Practice, and Public Health. We have joint degree programs with several departments and schools. Our individual research topics engage a range of contemporary issues, including corporations and finance, media and communication, migration and demographics, science and technology, health and environment, heritage and identity, race and gender, violence and social control, poverty and rights, and political and economic development. This research informs the courses we teach.
Job Responsibilities/Duties:
- Supervise and maintain dry and wet lab spaces for the HaBBLab, including but not limited to consumables ordering, equipment requisitioning, physical and digital organization
- Provide support for project development and execution, including but not limited to writing IRBs, getting permits, organizing resources and materials, being physically present in the lab space and in the field as needed, data management, and task delegation
- Provide administrative support to Dr. Sarma and Clare Super as requested, including but not limited to submitting Concur expenses and planning travel
- Schedule, communicate, and work with undergraduate research assistants and volunteers to complete lab-related tasks and project work, train students as necessary
- Provide intellectual input and feedback when desired, including but not limited to editing papers, assisting in project development, writing literature reviews, doing background research
- Supervise and support wet lab work on human biological samples beginning in summer 2026, including but not limited to knowing protocols, creating SOPs, managing equipment maintenance, ordering consumables, supervising and training students, and conducting field work as needed.
- Communicate and collaborate with other departments or academic institutes on relevant projects, utilize university resources for problem solving and management
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
This position is a 3 year term appointment.
Occasional or weekend and/or evening hours would be required based on business needs.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Anthropology, Biology, or related discipline and 1 to 2 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Experience in lab management and/or research support and Masters degree preferred.

Pay Range
$44,500.00 - $55,000.00 Annual Rate Salary offers are made based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the requirements of the position, and in alignment with salary ranges based on external market data for the job's level.
