Research Developer in ELN Interoperability and AI-Powered LLM Assistant Tools

This project is an interdisciplinary project at the University of Southampton exploring how artificial intelligence (specifically LLMs) can enhance scientific research and data management. The project brings together expertise from chemistry, computer science, and engineering to develop innovative tools that make laboratory work more connected, efficient and intelligent. Through the project, we want to achieve the following:

  • Understand the landscape of Electronic Lab Notebook (ELN) interoperability
  • Enhance the interoperability of ELN and data services
  • Integrate AI tools directly into ELN workflows
  • Use LLM assistants to capture, retrieve and interpret experimental data
  • Develop reproducible, open and FAIR digital research practices

We are looking for an enthusiastic applicant with a strong understanding of both laboratory practice and digital systems to lead a new strand of work focused on ELN interoperability and the development of an AI-powered LLM assistant tool to support researchers in data capture, retrieval and management.

The post holder will review the interoperability of existing ELN platforms, identify opportunities for improved data exchange, and develop prototype tools and services that integrate AI-driven assistance into ELN workflows. This will involve close collaboration with research groups, institutions and technical partners to ensure that solutions are practical, scalable and aligned with the needs of the research community.

Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications in a STEM subject, or have extensive experience working in a laboratory or research data environment. They must also have demonstrable experience developing and running AI or LLM-based tools, and in building interoperable software or online services. Strong collaborative and communication skills are essential, as the role involves working closely with diverse research and technical teams.

This is an exciting opportunity to help shape the next generation of digital research tools at Southampton, linking laboratory practice with emerging AI infrastructure. The successful applicant will join a growing community of researchers and developers within the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering and will have the opportunity to publish, present and develop their own expertise as part of this innovative programme.

The position is offered as a full-time post with a fixed-term contract. The post is based at the University of Southampton in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences and funded by AIChemy.

Equality, diversity and Inclusion is central to the ethos in the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, having held an Athena SWAN Silver award since 2014. We particularly encourage women, Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME), LGBT and disabled applicants to apply for this position. The School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering considers applicants that wish to work flexibly, and due consideration is given to applicants who have taken a career break. The University has a generous maternity policy and onsite childcare facilities. For further information please visit https://www.southampton.ac.uk/chemistry/about/Equality/index.page
