Research Engineer in PHY Design for Future Communication Systems

The University of Surrey is a global community of ideas and people, dedicated to life-changing education and research.

We are ambitious and have a bold vision of what we want to achieve - shaping ourselves into one of the best universities in the world, which we are achieving through the talents and endeavour of every employee.

Our culture empowers people to achieve this aim and to collectively, and individually, make a real difference.

The role

The Institute for Communication Systems (ICS) home of the 5G/6G Innovation Centre (5G/6GIC) is looking to recruit a Research Engineer in PHY Design for Future Communication Systems.

This exciting opportunity will see the successful candidate undertake a range of Research and Development (R&D) activities in the field of Signal Processing for Future Communication Systems focusing on Advanced Physical (PHY) Layer appropriate for traditional and emerging computational platforms (e.g., analogue, neuromorphic) in accordance with the specified internal and external 5G/6GIC research projects.

ICS is the largest academic research institute in Europe specialising in all aspects of ICT (Information and Communication Technologies). It is home to over 200 researchers with expertise in all communication and broadcasting systems and has developed the best in class large scale testbeds for research and innovation and enjoys the state-of-the-art lab and computing facilities.

Established in 2012, 5GIC is the world’s first dedicated centre in researching end-to-end aspects of 5G and works closely with national and international leading academic institutes and key industrial partners. In November 2020, 6GIC was officially launched with parallel research undertaken in both 5G+ and 6G for 2030+.

About you

The successful candidate must have:

  • Deep understanding of MIMO and massive MIMO systems for 5G systems and beyond
  • Deep knowledge of advanced signal processing techniques for 5GNR Physical Layer, including MIMO and massive MIMO detection and precoding
  • Very strong coding skills (e.g., C, Matlab)
  • Prior experience with wireless research platforms (e.g., USRPs)
  • An overall working knowledge of 3GPP cellular networks (e.g.,: LTE, 5GNR)
  • An understanding of the current and future challenges in 5G and Open RAN systems
  • Hardware and/or software implementation of digital signal processing algorithms in actual, real-time systems
