Position Highlights

The University of Arizona's Steward Observatory invites you to apply to the role of Research Engineering Electronics Technician II. This position will assist Engineers in designing and supporting the build of Optical Ground based Telescopes and future Space projects. The Technician will assist other Engineers and Technicians in the department from start to finish of projects assigned to the shop. They will be tasked with the responsibility of organizing the planning of build work such as Electronic board layout and providing parts list for the completion of the Circuit boards. This will also include the build of harnesses and documentation of the cables. Must have experience with running a Reflow oven and stencil setup for Circuit boards.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provides support to UofA Engineer and Technicians by building circuit boards and cable harnesses for telescopes as requested.
  • Able to read drawings for Electronic Control panels and assemble these with quality workmanship.
  • Order parts form Bill of Materials (BOMs) and support the interface with Vendors.
  • Fabricate enclosures for Power and Control telescope systems, this will include working with engineers to debug and installation of these systems.
  • Be able to use hand tools such as wire strippers and crimper's.
  • Solder surface mount parts on boards that include small pitch components and thru hole connectors with a high level of proficiency.
  • Maintain Material and Safety documents for the Lab. Assist Engineering Staff with needed test Instruments and tools for debug of circuit boards, panels and harnesses.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Skilled at using hand tools, such as wire strippers and crimper's.
  • Able to set up a reflow oven for circuit board fabrication along with stencil set up for applying solder paste to boards.
  • Able to solder surface mount parts on circuit boards and use multimeter to debug circuits.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or high school diploma equivalency is required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Must have experience with running a Reflow oven and stencil setup for Circuit boards.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in operation of reflow ovens including stencil set up for electronic boards.
  • 2 year Technical Electronic degree
