Edinburgh Napier University is the number one Scottish Modern University for research in Computer Science & Informatics, Engineering and for Architecture, Built Environment and Planning, as per the Research Excellence Framework 2021.

Currently, our School of Computing, Engineering & the Built Environment is leading an EPSRC-funded project and is recruiting a Research Fellow in Computational Fluid-Structure Interaction to focus on developing computational algorithms for fluid-structure interaction problems including the multiphysics effect of electromagnetism.

The Role:

As a Research Fellow in the “MAPFSI” project, you will use your hands-on experience in computational methods for fluid-structure interaction problems to carry out independent research and develop new computational methodologies and associated software framework under the guidance of the PI and other collaborators.

Your strong working knowledge of numerical methods such as FEM, FDM, and/or FVM will help you develop advanced numerical methodologies and software frameworks for the simulation of fluid-structure interactions of magnetoactive polymers.

The role will also involve formulating problems using the finite element method in solid and fluid mechanics, validating computational models using benchmarks and experimental results, and assessing and improving algorithm performance on high-performance computing (HPC) clusters.

This is an opportunity to develop a simulation framework for challenging FSI problems and disseminate research outputs in journal papers, presentations, posters, and conferences.

If you are excited about Computational Fluid-Structure Interaction and have the relevant skills, we would love to hear from you. In return, we offer fantastic benefits, a collaborative environment, and the chance to work on meaningful research.

What we will need from you:

  • A PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Civil Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Computational Mechanics/Engineering or related discipline (Thesis submitted by the start date).
  • Strong working knowledge of numerical methods such as FEM, FDM, and/or FVM.
  • Demonstrable experience in formulating problems using the finite element method for solid and fluid mechanics.
  • Proven hands-on experience with code development for computational fluid dynamics or computational solid mechanics using the finite element method.
  • Demonstrable experience with programming languages such as C++, Fortran, and Python.
  • Proven hands-on experience in using simulation software such as ANSYS, OpenFOAM, StarCCM+, COMSOL etc.
