About us

The Centre for Sports and Exercise Medicine (CSEM) comprises the BSc, iBSc and MSc programmes in Sports Medicine, Exercise & Health based at the Institute of Sport, Exercise and Health (ISEH). The CSEM (head, Professor Mark Hamer) is an integral part of the Bloomsbury Campus (Research Department for Targeted Intervention) of the Division of Surgery and Interventional Science. Current research foci within CSEM include physical activity and population health, sports injury, musculoskeletal pathology and injury prevention, sports medicine and athlete health. Our research addresses real medical and public health needs, and has demonstrable impact on national policy and practice.

The ISEH is one of three locations forming the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine (NCSEM), a major legacy project of the 2012 London Olympic Games. More Information on the Institute of Sport, Exercise and Health can be found at https://www.iseh.co.uk/

About the role

As part of a British Heart Foundation Programme grant we are seeking a Research Fellow to contribute to work on physical activity behaviour and cardiovascular disease. We are aiming to establish a series of behavioural interventions targeted at physical activity utilising contemporary digital approaches and wearables.

The right candidate is expected to have worked extensively on digital health interventions grounded in health psychology or behavioural science. Experience in the field of physical activity, health psychology or behavioural science, and/or digital health/wearables is essential. Ability to work within multidisciplinary teams and clinical settings will constitute an advantage.

About you

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Develop resources for workshops to inform interventions, including: interview scripts; identify barriers, facilitators; design personalized, sustainable physical activity plans.
  • Identify/ develop contemporary digital health approaches grounded in health psychology theory appropriate for your target audience.
  • Design and lead interventions, including: preparation of NHS ethics applications, study design, recruitment, data collection, analyses.
  • Present findings at conferences and key internal meetings.
  • Contribute to our monthly working group, and actively collaborate with researchers from other areas of the programme when opportunities arise.
  • To work as part of the UCL Centre for Sports and Exercise Medicine team and the wider Divisional activity.
  • Demonstrate good academic citizenship through attending and contributing to the general business of ISEH, including seminars and team meetings, sharing expertise with other staff, teaching and welcoming opportunities for learning and professional development as they occur.
