The Institute for Communication Systems (ICS) home of the 5G/6G Innovation Centre (5G/6GIC) is seeking to appoint a Research Fellow in Physical Layer Radio for 3D Angular Momentum Multiplexing. The title of the project is Spectrally Efficient Low Cost Energy Efficient Communication for Transport using 3D Angular Modes (SELECT-3DAM).

SELECT-3DAM has recently been awarded a three year project by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. The work in the project builds on recent seminal work carried out by the project investigators on Linear Angular Momentum Multiplexing (LAMM). The project is an exciting opportunity to undertake work on antenna synthesis and physical layer radio to underpin the science to enable practical implementation of an evolution of this concept, 3D Angular Momentum Multiplexing (3DAMM), for advanced infrastructure to train communications. Its application is to provide a low cost, energy efficient solution to deliver reliable gigabit connectivity to train carriages in tunnels. 3DAMM is a highly innovative wireless transmission architecture that has promise of revolutionising spectral efficiency in some wireless links. We are looking to attract the brightest and best to form an effective team to develop and investigate the concept further. Together with another researcher appointed to the role focused on RF and antennas, this will include designing and constructing a concept demonstrator.

ICS is the largest academic research institute in Europe specialising in all aspects of ICT (Information and Communication Technologies). It is home to over 200 researchers with expertise in all communication and broadcasting systems and has developed the best in class large scale testbeds for research and innovation and enjoys the state-of-the-art lab and computing facilities.

Established in 2012, 5GIC is the world’s first dedicated centre in researching end-to-end aspects of 5G and works closely with national and international leading academic institutes and key industrial partners. In November 2020, 6GIC was officially launched with parallel research undertaken in both 5G+ and 6G for 2030+.

About you

We are looking for a candidate with:

  • Strong expertise in signal processing for wireless communication systems, including modulation and coding techniques on the physical layer of a radio, array antennas and their use in multiple input multiple output (MIMO) wireless connectivity.
  • Very good understanding of communication theory.
  • Strong command of mathematics and simulation in MATLAB.
  • Proven track record of innovation supported by publications in high ranked journals and conferences.
  • Very good written and verbal communication skills.

You may also have:

  • Knowledge and experience in the concept of orbital angular momentum (OAM) for wireless communication.
  • Knowledge and experience in programming software defined radios such as ADALM-PLUTO.
  • Knowledge of current state-of-the art in infrastructure to train communications.

What we can offer

In addition to salary, you will receive a generous annual leave entitlement of 25 days holiday plus 7 university closure days and 8 bank holidays, a generous pension, access to world-class leisure facilities on campus, a range of travel schemes, and supportive family friendly benefits including an excellent on-site nursery.
