Research Fellow in Virology and Cell Biology

The University of Surrey is a global community of ideas and people, dedicated to life-changing education and research.

We are ambitious and have a bold vision of what we want to achieve - shaping ourselves into one of the best universities in the world, which we are achieving through the talents and endeavour of every employee.

Our culture empowers people to achieve this aim and to collectively, and individually, make a real difference.

The role

Respiratory viruses contribute to the development and exacerbation of chronic lung diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a significant childhood pathogen and is increasingly recognised as a pathogen of importance in older adults. The majority of older adults admitted to hospital with RSV infection have an underlying health condition, of which COPD or asthma is a significant proportion (27.3%) and was associated with increased requirement for ventilatory support. RSV has also been identified as the infectious agent responsible for 8.7% of out-patient managed exacerbations of COPD (8.7%).

Using both traditional cell culture approaches and advanced 3D airway cell models, this project will investigate if a newly developed COPD treatment could prevent RSV-induced inflammation and cellular changes that contribute to lung remodelling and exacerbations of lung disease.

The post holder will contribute to the day-to-day running of the laboratory and supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students. It is also expected the successful candidate will contribute to the writing and submission of high-quality research publications and deliver scientific presentations at national and international conferences.
