RESEARCH FELLOW
We are seeking a Postdoctoral Scientist to join the laboratory of Dr. Jay Brito Querido in the Department of Biological Chemistry at the University of Michigan Medical School.
The lab investigates the regulation of mRNA translation initiation and its implications for human health and disease, with a particular focus on repeat-associated non-AUG (RAN) translation. Using cryo-electron microscopy and biochemical approaches, our goal is to elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying RAN translation and its contribution to neurodegeneration.
The primary responsibility is to conduct research to advance the understanding of the role of RNA helicases in the regulation of mRNA translation. The successful candidate will develop and apply different techniques, including single-particle cryo-electron microscopy, to study translational regulation. This position will have access to state-of-the-art facilities at the Life Sciences Institute and in the Department of Biological Chemistry.
In addition, this position will contribute to laboratory seminars and discussions, allowing the candidate to impact the direction of their research project and other projects within the research group. Assist in training of lab members. Contribute to preparing research for publication and ensure that the research is performed according to the best practice in compliance with the University of Michigan and funding agency's guidelines.
PhD in biological sciences or related field with at least 2-3 years of laboratory research experience. The ability to work productively in a team environment and work with limited supervision to identify a broad range of techniques to achieve the project's primary goal. The successful candidate will be highly motivated, able to multi-task efficiently, work independently and be committed to research. Some evening and weekend work may be required.
Experience in RNA biology, helicases, structural biology, and neurology is an advantage.
