Research Fellow – (NDARC)

  • Employment Type: Full - time (35 hours a week)
  • Duration: Fixed Term contract until 30th November 2026
  • Remuneration: $127,947 base, plus 17% superannuation and leave loading
  • Work rights required: Visa sponsorship is not available for this position. Candidates must hold full rights to work in Australia to be considered for this position.
  • Location: Hybrid/Randwick, Sydney

Who are we:

The National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre (NDARC) is a world-leader in research that positively impacts alcohol and other drug use and related harms. The Centre, based at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Faculty of Medicine and Health, was established in 1986 in response to an emerging crisis of heroin use. For over 35 years NDARC has been Australia’s leading research centre in the sector.

NDARC has a holistic view of the complex challenges associated with the determinants of alcohol and other drug use and associated harms. Using research to address real-world problems, NDARC generates high-quality evidence across an array of fields that directly influences harm reduction in diverse populations.

Details of the role

The National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre (NDARC) seeks a highly-motivated and skilled Research Fellow (Level B) to join our team. The Research Fellow is expected to carry out independent and team research relevant to alcohol epidemiology, including the design and analysis of longitudinal cohort studies, and to undertake activities to develop their research expertise relevant to this field.

The role of Research Fellow reports to the Associate Professor and has no direct reports.

Some key skills required:

  • A PhD in public health, behavioural sciences, epidemiology or a related discipline.
  • Engage in individual and/or collaborative research in a manner consistent with disciplinary practice.
  • Create scholarly impact in the discipline which is recognised by peers in the advancement of disciplinary knowledge.
  • Establish a personal research portfolio and start developing independent research proposals.
  • Contribute to the development of applications for competitive funding under the guidance of senior colleagues.
  • Contribute to the establishment of a new longitudinal cohort of young people focused on their access to alcohol.
  • Contribute to stakeholder engagement and broader research translation activities.
  • Demonstrated track record in research with outcomes of high quality and high impact with clear evidence of the desire and ability to continually achieve research excellence as well as the capacity for research leadership.
