PRIMARY DETAIL

  • Salary Package: From $123,435 to $146,044 Level B (PhD), p.a, plus 17% employer's superannuation and annual leave loading
  • Appointment Type: Full time, fixed term role for 12 months
  • Location: Macquarie University, Wallumattagal Campus

The Role

The School of Humanities at Macquarie University is seeking to appoint a Research Fellow, who will undertake the study of papyri held by the Gale History Museum at Macquarie University. The appointee will have knowledge of the field of papyrology, including the study, cataloguing and conservation of Greek and Coptic papyri. The research fellow will study the collection history of the Macquarie papyri with a view to publication; undertake conservation and cataloguing of the papyri as required; bring online a portal displaying images and metadata on the papyri; and assess the potential for future publication of the Macquarie papyri.

About You

You will be a highly motivated academic with a PhD in papyrology or a related discipline, experience of working with papyri, and knowledge of and understanding of the issues around provenance research. You should have a developing portfolio of publications in high-ranked journals or with prestigious publishers and a record of collaboration in research and public engagement, including with external stakeholders. Your interpersonal skills and communication should be of a high standard and you should be committed to Equality, Diversity, and Inclusivity, and also understand its application in both Higher Education and the context of museums.

About Us

Established in 2024, the School of Humanities at Macquarie University is an interdisciplinary research-focused School which brings together internationally recognised researchers in history and archaeology, literature and creative writing, creative arts, and philosophy. Our work addresses cultural, social, and technological challenges by deepening historical understanding, advancing creative practice, and examining the concepts of value and identity that shape human life. Researchers in the School hold competitive national and international grants and lead projects of global significance.

The School is located within Macquarie's Faculty of Arts which is united in the spirit of interdisciplinary discovery. The School is housed in the Arts Precinct, which also houses the Gale History Museum which holds the largest papyrus collection in the Southern hemisphere.

Essential Criteria

  • PhD in a relevant field;
  • Demonstrated experience in high-quality research and scholarship, which may be evidenced by an internationally competitive publication record and success in attracting research support;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of papyrology through prior research focused on papyri leading to publications in prestigious journals;
  • Demonstrated ability to undertake provenance research on papyri;
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and a record of working collaboratively with fellow academic and professional staff;

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience in the cataloguing and conservation of papyri;
  • Experience of the development of public engagement and research impact;
  • Experience working with Museum collections and Museum professionals and/or with others in the wider Galleries, Museums, Archives and Libraries (GLAM) sector;
