Offer Description
The Fundação Gaspar Frutuoso, F.P., in conjunction with the Institute for Agricultural and Environmental Research and Technologies (IITAA), is announcing a call for applications for the award of a (1) Research Fellowship (BI) for a master’s degree holder enrolled in a Ph.D. program, under the Program Contract for the Institute for Agricultural and Environmental Research and Technologies (IITAA), Ref. UID/00153/2025, approved by the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P.
1. Purpose of the Activity:
This doctoral project focuses on investigating the potential of natural resources as a source of bioactive compounds. The aim is to gain a comprehensive understanding of the biology of microalgae, the chemistry of the metabolites they produce, and their bioactivity, with a particular focus on processes involved in the inflammatory response. The fellow will focus their work on microalgal growth and the biological activities of microalgae relevant to non-cellular and cellular in vitro assays. This project is thus part of a broader effort to protect and enhance marine resources, as well as to contribute to the development of a sustainable blue bioeconomy.

3. Admission Requirements:
3.1 Master’s degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Agricultural Sciences, or related fields
3.2. Education and experience in:
a) Life sciences;
b) Health sciences;
3.3 Reports, scientific publications, conference presentations, and participation in research projects in the scientific fields covered by this call for applications;
3.4 Knowledge of English;
3.5 Ability to work in a team;
3.6 Immediate availability; and
3.7 Enrollment in a Ph.D. program at the University of the Azores.
4. Applicable legislation and regulations:
Statute of the Scientific Research Fellow, approved by Law No. 40/2004 of August 18, amended and republished by Decree-Law No. 202/2012 of August 27, by Decree-Law No. 89/2013 of July 9, by Decree-Law No. 233/2012 of October 29, and by Law No. 12/2013 of January 29, and amended by Decree-Law No. 123/2019 of August 28, as currently in force, and the FCT, I.P. Research Fellowship Regulations, as currently in force.
5. Work Location:
The work will be carried out at the IITAA facilities, Angra do Heroísmo Campus, Rua Capitão João d'Ávila, 9700-042 Angra do Heroísmo, Azores, Portugal, under the scientific supervision of Professor Daniela Sofia Almeida Ribeiro, Ph.D., and Dr. Joana Barcelos e Ramos.
6. Duration of the fellowship:
The fellowship will last for 12 months and will be renewed annually for the duration of the respective project task, concluding upon completion of the IITAA research project, reference UID/00153/2025, subject to the fellow’s performance, on an exclusive basis, in accordance with the FCT’s Regulations on Advanced Human Resources Training and pursuant to Article 5 of the Research Fellow Statute.
7. Amount of the monthly living allowance:
The scholarship amount is €1,309.64, in accordance with the table of scholarship amounts awarded directly by FCT, I.P. in Portugal (https://www.fct.pt/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Tabela_valores_SMM_2025.pdf), published in Annex I of the FCT Research Fellowship Regulations, issued by Regulation No. 950/2019—Diário da República No. 241/2019, Series II, dated December 16, 2019. The fellowship will be paid monthly by bank transfer. In addition to this amount, Voluntary Social Security, corresponding to the first bracket, will be added if the candidate chooses to enroll in it, as well as Personal Accident Insurance.
8. Selection Methods:
The selection methods to be used are as follows: review of the candidate’s resume and a professional interview, weighted at 80% and 20%, respectively. If none of the candidates meets the required profile (overall score below 50%), the scholarship will not be awarded.
9. Composition of the Selection Committee:
The Selection Committee consists of Prof. Daniela Sofia Almeida Ribeiro, Ph.D., Chair; and full members Joana Barcelos e Ramos, Ph.D., and Susana Isabel Chaves Ribeiro, Ph.D.
10. Publication/Notification of Results:
The final evaluation results will be published in a list ranked by final score, and candidates will be notified via email. The provisions of the Code of Administrative Procedure apply to this competition, and if the decision is unfavorable, candidates have 10 business days to file an appeal.
11. Application Deadline and Submission Procedure:
The call for applications is open for a period of 20 business days following the publication of the announcement.
