RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT
In the scope of the ProjectBIODI
Reference: Primetek BI#2
A call is open for the allocation of 1 (one) research fellowship for a graduate, enrolled in a master course (BI), within the Research Project titled BIODI, funded by own funds, taking place at the Department of Informatics of the University of Beira Interior (http://www.di.ubi.pt), under the following conditions:
1. Research Field: Machine Learning/Pattern Recognition
2. Objectives:
Medical Image Analysis in Multimodal Data
3. Requirements for admission and hiring:
- Hold a BSc degree in Informatics, Electrical or Electronic Engineering, Mathematics of affine area and meet the conditions to be enrolled in a cycle of studies leading to the MSc degree.
If the required academic degree has been conferred by a foreign higher education institution, the requirements of Decree-Law 66/2018, of 16th August and Ministerial Order no. 33/2019, of 25th January, shall be obeyed. The presentation of the certificate(s) recognizing foreign academic degrees is mandatory for the signing of the fellowship contract. The proof of registration in the 2nd cycle is required for the fellowship contractualization.
4. Work plan:
The work plan proposed for this research fellowship aims to develop and test multimodal models for the analysis of medical imaging data, based on the supervised learning paradigm and using deep neural networks.
Subsequently, the fellow will install, configure, and integrate the selected models into a common experimental framework, developing protocols that enable their objective evaluation under different usage scenarios. The work will include the selection and preparation of suitable datasets, the definition of performance metrics, and the execution of comparative studies to assess aspects such as recognition accuracy, robustness to noise and other adverse conditions, generalization capability across speakers and contexts, and computational efficiency.
The fellow will also contribute to the critical analysis of the obtained results, the preparation of technical and scientific reports, and the development of research documentation, supporting the identification of the most suitable solutions for different automatic speech recognition applications and contributing to the dissemination of the project outcomes.
5. Applicable legislation and regulations:
Research Fellowship Holder Statute, approved by Law No. 40/2004, of 18 August, in its current wording (amended by Decree-Law No. 123/2019, of 28 August); Regulation for Research Studentships and Fellowships of the Foundation for Science and Technology (Regulation No. 950/2019) published in the Diário da República, 2nd series, No. 241, 16 December 2019; Regulation for Research Fellowships of the University of Beira Interior – RBIUBI (Regulation No. 100/2020) published in the Diário da República, 2nd series, n.º 27 7 February 2020.
6. Work location:
The work will be developed at the Department of Informatics, Pole I, Block 6, of the University of Beira Interior, Covilhã, under the scientific supervision of Doctors Hugo Pedro Proença (hugomcp@di.ubi.pt).
7. Fellowship duration and conditions:
The fellowship is opened for 10 months, expected to start in november 2026. The activity is in regime of exclusive dedication in accordance with the RBIUBI.
8. Benefits:
A monthly maintenance allowance will be granted in accordance with the Annex I of the RBIUBI, with the amount of 1.090,98€, according to the updated values that can be consulted at https://www.fct.pt/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Tabela-de-Valores-SMM-2026.pdf. The fellowship holder will have a personal accident insurance and can choose to be covered by the voluntary social insurance. These values will be added to the amount of monthly maintenance allowance.
9. Eligibility criteria:
The selection methods to be used will be composed of 2 evaluation phases, according to the following:
1st phase - Curricular evaluation (C1) that includes:
- Bachelor of science mark (30%);
- Previous experience in topics of knowledge related with project scope (70%);
2nd phase – Interview (C2):
An interview will be done to the best ranked candidates, by video-conference.
For the final evaluation, each of the evaluation phases have an assessment of 50%.

13. Publication/notification of results:
The final results of the evaluation process will be published in a sorted list, by the final classification obtained, and posted in a visible and public place of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Beira Interior. The candidate(s) will be notified of the decision by e-mail.
14. Complaint and Appeal Procedures:
After communication of the provisional lists of the results in the different phases of the selection process (Admission and Exclusion, Curricular Evaluation and Interview), the candidates have 10 working days to pronounce their disagreement, under the terms of article 121 and the Código do Procedimento Administrativo. If any allegations are presented, the final decision will be issued after the analysis of the statements presented during the prior hearing of interested parties. After the statutory deadline of 10 working days, the proposal for the final classification and ranking of the candidates becomes definitive.
