Offer Description
A call is open for the allocation of 1 (one) research fellowship for BSc, Msc student or integrated master student (BII), within the Research Project entitled SG_115_DT, TALENT, funded by UNITA Alliance, taking place at the DEM/Faculdade de Engenharia of the University of Beira Interior https://www.ubi.pt/entidade/departamento_de_engenharia_electromecanica, under the following conditions:

AIoT – Artificial Intelligence of Things
Objectives:
Edge-AI implementation on STM32 node for environmental monitoring and mobility management in mountain environments
Work plan:
The work includes the following main tasks:
- i) Incorporation of data acquisition software from temperature, pressure, humidity, and luminosity sensors into the STM32 NUCLEO N6;
- ii) Testing and development of ML solutions for creating learning models;
- iii) Development of the solution with a pressure sensor, vehicle counting/passing, and incorporation into the STM32 NUCLEO N6;
- iv) Conducting field tests in parking lots in the city and/or mountain environment;
- v) Use of new datasets to obtain new learning models in collaboration with the TALENT team;
- vi) Writing the report and preparing a publication for submission

Work location:
The work will be developed at the DEM / Faculdade de Engenharia da UBI, Calçada Fonte do Lameiro and, partially, in the UBIMEDICAL, Covilhã under the scientific supervision of Doctor Fernando José da Silva Velez, fjv@ubi.pt.
Fellowship duration and conditions:
The fellowship is opened for 3 (three) months, starting on September 2026. The activity is in regime of exclusive dedication in accordance with the RBIUBI.

- Be registered in 1st cycle of a degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering or related fields and and also to fulfil the following criteria:
- Have proven experience in developing solutions in embedded systems based on STM32 and interest in developing solutions with edge-AI
- Have proven experience in scientific research initiation, synthesis ability, problem-solving, and a collaborative mindset
BIIs can only be awarded to those who do not exceed, with the conclusion of the fellowship contract in question, including any renewals, an accumulated period of one year in this type of fellowship, followed or interpolated.
If the required academic degree has been conferred by a foreign higher education institution, the requirements of Decree-Law 66/2018, of 16th August and Ministerial Order no. 33/2019, of 25th January, shall be obeyed. The presentation of the certificate(s) recognizing foreign academic degrees is mandatory for the signing of the fellowship contract. The proof of registration in the 1st cycle of study degree is required for the fellowship contractualization.

Benefits
A monthly maintenance allowance will be granted in accordance with the Annex I of the RBIUBI, with the amount of 701,12€ according to the updated values that can be consulted at https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas. The fellowship holder will have a personal accident insurance and can choose to be covered by the voluntary social insurance. These values will be added to the amount of monthly maintenance allowance.

Selection process
The selection of candidates will be based on a merit evaluation, considering academic background, relevant experience, and overall suitability for the project. The final score will be calculated on a scale of 0 to 100, based on three weighted criteria: A) Academic Qualifications; B) Relevant Experience and Technical Skills, and C) Motivation and Interview Performance.
A) Under Academic Qualifications, emphasis will be placed on the relevance and final classification credit units/courses in the Signal Analysis, Instrumentation and Measurement and Telecommunications fields. An increase of up to 10 points may be applied as function of their scientific background in areas such as Electrical and Computer Engineering, Informatic Engineering or related fields.
B) Relevant Experience and Technical Skills will assess prior experience on the domain of optimisation of embedded systems.
C) Motivation and Interview Performance will consider the quality and alignment of the motivation letter with the project’s objectives, as well as the candidate’s clarity, technical understanding, and communication skills demonstrated during the interview.
The top 3 candidates in items A and B will be admitted to the interview (C). The final score will be calculated using the formula: Final Score = (A, Academic Qualifications × 0.4) + (B, Relevant Experience × 0.4) + (C, Interview Performance × 0.2).
Candidates must obtain a minimum score of 50 to be considered eligible. In the case of a tie, preference will be given to the candidate with the highest score in Relevant Experience and Technical Skills (B).

Complaint and Appeal Procedures:
After communication of the provisional lists of the results in the different phases of the selection process (Admission and Exclusion, Curricular Evaluation and Interview), the candidates have 10 working days to pronounce their disagreement, under the terms of article 121 and the Código do Procedimento Administrativo. If any allegations are presented, the final decision will be issued after the analysis of the statements presented during the prior hearing of interested parties. After the statutory deadline of 10 working days, the proposal for the final classification and ranking of the candidates becomes definitive.
The proposal for the final ranking of the candidates will constitute a reserve list for selection for a period of 1 (one) month.
